I always thought a Locost would make a great EV

Battery costs would be at least $5k for something like that.

That's assuming new...guess you could try to adapt some cheap junkyard cells.

G'day, great to see this was posted on GMS. My original inspiration for building cars was Chapman's early clubmans and this is my first attempt at doing a take on an electric clubman. Rather than trying to copy the look, this design is about taking the philosophy and applying current materials, knowledge, parts and the budget end of emerging EV tech to create a lightweight EV.
To answer the query on batteries, it uses lithium ferrous phosphate (LFP) cells (safest form of lithium for cars and also best cost per kWh, but less power to weight than Lipo cells used in model cars and planes. The battery has 45 cells and the cells are 3.3 volts, 100Amp hours and about $150 each, so about $6,500 total new and battery weight is 150kg.

Welcome! Don't let my first comment fool you, I think this is a really cool build.

Ahem, it's GRM.

Now that we've got that out of the way, what kind of range do you get out of that thing?

Thanks for positive feedback. In reply to PHeller: It has been using around 1% of the battery charge per km but depends on how driven and I haven't been driving it to maximise range.

How do you like the JAZ seats? What is the Layback on them? As is typical JAZ they don't have very good overall dimensions on the seats.

MX-5 suspension - is there anything it can't do?

Awesome project!

In reply to nocones: JAZ seats are good for the application where it is being used on gravel roads alot - light, tough, easy to clean and comfortable enough. Main trade off is higher sides hold you in better but make it harder to get in and out. Not sure what you mean by layback, but there is a direct side on view in the instructable that will show the seat angles.
