All I'm saying is the Buick Somerset is the Miata of mid 1980s GM FWD sedans badge engineered by companies that no longer exist.

Whichever skin you adorn, it will be awesome. I think the real value will be starting a community conversation about an extremely valid grassroots opportunity. Late model tube frames are out there, affordably. Well engineered, inexpensive components, simple to adjust, easy to wrench with incredible performance potential.
I think a well prepped, competitive NASA ST1 car can be built for front running Spec Miata or Spec3 money. Incredible bang for the buck and the highest performance per dollar I could think of.
I am hoping your experience inspires folks to explore this option.

Maybe I missed this earlier in the thread (how did I miss the start of this?) but I'd love to see this thing run at the UTCC with a hot shoe. The unobtanium cars are cool and all, but what can be done with an old roundy round surplus car?

Nothing wrong with it running the same engine they all run. This isn't about building a hand grenade, it's about building an anvil.

Well, I ain't no hotshoe, but I fully intend on sending in my application for UTCC in 2022.  I think it will be fun to see how the old girl (ASA tube frame/driveline with Gen 1 Camaro body version) will stack up against the exotics.  Or not.  Regardless, i'm going for style points.

This needs to get a move on....Because I have an 82 cutlass shell with the floor and firewall already cut out that would literally fall onto the ASA chassis with the same 108" wheel base....

just drop it off at my house. I can have a body on it in a weekend

We should find you an appropriate tube frame and you do a simultaneous build...your cutlass sounds perfect!

Ok, this isnt' a question for me, but given the interest- where do you find these chassis that are so cheap?  The ideas people are posting are pretty awesome, and I would like to see more.

I found mine "word of mouth" from a friend but one place to look is on FB group "Late Model Cars and Parts Only". Another group is "Circle Track Classifieds". Depending on where you live, the locals might be the best source. There is a healthy population around me in eastern Maryland/Delaware.

Cool!

It's almost too bad that these would not be good autocrossers because featuring a "sub class" at the challenge would be cool.  The challenge over the other events since the cars might be lost in them- unless GRM can make sure there are a number of you builders allowed in.

I do not autocross much so I'm not an expert, but it seems like there should be a class for them, although the tubeframe is likely a ding.
With NASA, I will run TT1 /ST1 in the Mid-Atlantic. It is purely power to weight with mod penalties worked through an online calculator.  ST1 has seen fairly light attendance lately, so I am hoping that a few others drink this delicious kool-aide and join the party.

In reply to jh36 :

I know there's a place for them to run, it's just that they seem better fits to track events.  And nothing wrong with that at all- other than finding a place where a lot of projects can be put together in one event to let GRM feature them.

I'm just watching what you are doing, so I'm not really aware of the kinds of events that GRM can call for multiple versions of these cars to show up at once.  This seems to be one of the better ways to make dedicated track cars.

Just go to Facebook Marketplace , set the location to Charlotte, NC and type in "race car" or "chassis" and see what comes up.

One example.....Marketplace - SCCA/SVRA GT1 Rolling Chassis Ford | Facebook

Is something like this $700 the right type of chassis?

In reply to Pete Gossett (Forum Supporter) :

It could be. It would take an email to make sure it is a perimeter car ( means it is "square" and not offset to one side for circle tracking). Nice that it has a quick change. I typically see good frames, steering, quick change rear, some suspension for a few thousand. That is worth an email!!
