The "above ground" synthetics.... Where do they get their chemical feedstock from? A Star Trek universal replicator?
It comes from good ol' crude, or natural gas.

Sometimes. Other times it comes from forcing a reaction between an oxoacid and a hydroxyl like alcohol, or it can start wth an oxide of ethylene and propylene in the case of PAG oils.
When I talk about "above ground" synthetics, I'm talking about the ones made without crude bases.
Just got a chance to check in again, and thanks to the guys willing to take the time to give me a thought out answer, rather than just a flippant one line.
That does jive with the limited knowledge I did have on the subject, having already been a fan of Amsoil quality... just not their marketing.

Much truth. I signed up once just to get the discount. The amount of bulls#!t they mailed to me that I was supposed to sell... Amsoil, sets of knives, specially minted coins with some famous person on them, vitamin supplements.... ridiculous. Basically, if it was something they advertised on a loose leaf page of Reader's Digest in 1985, I was supposed to hock it. Great oil, but not worth the cost if you don't sign up, and not worth the trees they killed for the BS they try to get you to sell along with it.
That is partly what started me down the oil rabbit hole. Much of their educational videos and stuff were pretty factual, or at least factual enough for me to be able to educatedly know how to find the non-marketing truth.
