so im yanking the motor in my 64 to change the leaking freexe plugs.

the "coolant" is a very scientific mixture of stopleak, barsleak, nutmeg, antifreeze, tap water, and rust.

obviously about the consistency of mud. no lie, it hactually sticks to your fingers......

ill be putting thermostat, heater core, radiator, some hoses, and ALL freeze plugs in it while its out.

what can I use to get the remaining crap outta the cooling system? I don't want to contaminate the new radiator.

I figure there has to be something I can do while its on the engine stand to get it close, then another step when its back in the car.

Attack the engine with an old screw driver and a hose when you have all the freeze plugs out to get the majority of the carp out.

What a friend of mine did after running an engine on a similar scientific mixture.was to backflush the engine while it was out and then put some pantyhose over the radiator inlet before putting the hose back on. That way, you have a fairly fine filter.

Can't remember if he then let the engine idle on plain water or on water with radiator flush in it. You have to watch the temperature like a hawk, but most of the crud will end up in your temporary filter. You might have to clean it up a couple of times before you get all the crud out.

I wonder if you could hook up a motor to the water pump while its on the stand and pump cleaning solution through the block? Did Chrysler ever make a reverse flow pump? If so and not too expensive, maybe bolt it and do the above in reverse as well.

I'd leave the upper and lower radiator hose on. Stick a garden hose in the lower rad hose and squeeze it to give it a decent seal. Fill it up until it starts coming out the top. Let it drain.

Repeat for each of the other hoses (including heater hose), pinching off the lower hose sometimes and letting it fill. Do this until it runs clear.

Lowes or HD should be able to give you enough parts to fab up a quick and dirty adaptor from hose to cooling hose.

Before pulling the motor pull t stat drain and refill with water. flush twice and drain all you can. Add 2 quarts of vinagar start motor and add 2 quarts of water or untill it just starts to flow out the upper hose run for 2 -3 minutes then pour in a box of baking soda DO NOT CAP let it foam out the rad it will foam in side to scrubing the inside bits. shut off if it get hot put hose in rad and fill with water flushing few times. When you pull the motor pull the freeze plugs and use a presure washer in the holes with one of those turbo spinning nozzles on the end.

should be good to go after that.

If its that bad, hot tank the block while it is out.

I've twice flushed out nasty cooling systems with Muriatic. I'm a little hazy on the details.

One of them was a car with an aluminum head, radiator, and heater core, and it failed to cause those to self-destruct.

pull all the freeze plugs and drain plugs... use a coat hanger to get in there to knock the crap loose, then flush it out with the garden hose... if you have a way to get hot water thru the hose- like, say, the washing machine hookup- then use that.

don't forget to flush the heater core out both ways with the hose until the water comes out clear- not doing so kind of renders the whole procedure in getting the block cleaned out a waste of time..

take the block to the carwash?

Follow these two pieces of advise ^^^ Knock out the freeze plugs, dig around, and take it to a pressure washer. The vast majority of the junk will be sitting in the bottom of the block.

Wear old clothes and a face shield.

Citric acid, I'd do it in car pre pull after pulling the hoses and t stat and blowing as much as I could out that way. Google will get you the details.

Or you can also get a drain king from HD and that will seal up the water hose to the cars hose.

Just open the faucet carefully and not all at once.
