DaveSmith wrote: Hey guys! Ive been out for a week and I spent 20 minutes reading and catching up. I found a topless chick and what seems to be a russian manifesto along with some GREAT designs that just blew my mind!!!! A few comments... KA, Senger, SET Halpine, Paolo, 05xtsy are sick sick sick! The pros vs. the regular guys: This may not be fair but we are very aware of the important contributions of all guys and there may be elments in a rudimentary line drawing that are genius, so dont think the pros are going to win everything. Also I am trying to get some more corp money/sponsorships since we are a small company and if I can do this we will add more awards (like a top ten, or "best kitchen table/napkin sketch etc). The design competition vs. the concept competition. It's both. We put a minimal amount of parameters to make sure things were open. The seat height, for example, MAY be lowered as the subie gas tank is slated for under the seat/rear bulkhead area... this can change and result in a lower roof line but that is NOT for sure. The truth is that the compatition is both design and concept with the reality being that the landmarks we gave are based on real chassis designs and limitations, yet there is some flexibility to adapt but it is a really qualitative thing. Remember that there is still two whole months before the deadlines and so far we are going along well with some great submissions. We have some press releases due out soon, and thanks to everyone for the stoke and creativity. Dave Smith President

Hi Dave, I have a question. The 2003-07 Subaru Impreza is the donor car for the 818 and we're encouraged to utilise as many components from this vehicle as possible in order to keep costs down. However, during this period the Impreza had a number of face-lifts which resulted in, for example, three different headlight units. If we were to incorporate Impreza headlights into our designs, which units should we use?

Here is my single seat version of what they are trying to build. 1400#, 2.0 WRX Intercooled Turbo, 4 wheel coil over suspension with inboard rear shocks, Stock 5-speed FWD Transaxle, and very fast indded. Having a streetable version of this would be awesome. And even have experience with an FFR Car as well.

Nice work everyone. Interesting sketching technique phenotyp.

Here are 2 sketches that I just did combining some elements appeared in our previous designs ;)

Phenotyp, that is a nice sketch, much better for me than your previous one. It has a great overall theme. On the down side, you still have too many side scoops which are complicating things. I think you should make it a bit more minimal and develop the side view to the package to see how/if it will work.

To several of the other guys who are working in various 3D programs… these are such powerful tools but they are just exposing your lack of design ability. I have never seen so many nasty surfaces in years. Some might be impressed with the slick 3D renderings but personally I am not encouraged.

Man, this thing (template-wise) is as 70s as it gets.

olpro, where do i recognize that name from?

this profile is straight up sharpened 911:

which is not a bad thing at all.

it's not about what it looks like sitting still. it's about what it looks like running.

Would love to see someone adapt the new Stratos to this contest - can't get any better than that.

Dang, so many good designs so far! Xabier's seems like the most realistic one so far. I'm fairly new to this competition, so I thought I'd give it a try. I've skimmed over the entire thread and learned quite a bit. I'm in a constant learning process about cars, and this thread has taught me quite a bit. Something has confused me though: How accurate do the sketches have to be to the templates that are given? I noticed that some designs are a little different than the basic template. For example, some of them have shorter rear overhands, but in the side view template, there's a guideline that shows quite a long overhang. Here's a quite photoshop overlay I did over a pen sketch I did: here are the original pen sketches: (and ignore the large spoilers. I was just playing around haha) One last question (though it has been asked already I think, but I didn't see an answer: What year is the donor Impreza? Any critique is appreciated!

whatever it ends up being better be better than this:

because that's almost old enough to drive itself.

In reply to phenotyp: The contest dimensions are nearly exactly Toyota MR-2. Given the high seating position of the driver over fueltank lay out (and I think the template uses a very very far back driver position given that its going to be a mid engine longitudinal lay out even with a H4 engine and the MR-2 is a mid engine transverse layout the MR2s driving position is still very forward of where the design parameters say ours should be) the shape of the MR2 is probably going to be very close to what the end production form of the challenge winner will look like.

In reply to openmoney: the large rear over hang is required because that's where the end of the transmission from the Impreza is going to be located

Sorry for postwhoreing but my mental gears are turning. The donor car is supposed to be an Impreza, but what about all the other cars that the EJ25 is in? (has its been annouced if its an EJ255 or EJ257 or if it's an early mod GD chassis Impreza the EJ20?) What about donor Legacy parts? The 05-09 Legacy has some sexy headlights, and the sedan has some pretty good looking tail lights too. Will the CV shafts, Rotors, Calipers, and suspension components be acquired from the donor car as well?

In reply to NismoNC:

yeah. the MR2 is so much fun, but its proportions are not conducive to the kind of power to weight that FFR is talking. the CG is way too high. that'll change, necessarily.

but it is really fine looking.

These are not drawings but I thought you'd be interested by these pictures... First thing I did was buy a model kit of the Subaru WRX to have an idea of the proportions by putting the engine in some sort of cardboard go-kart. Here's the result: First try at downloading from Flickr...
