Our resident F2T humper tells me the P5 is the better bet here.
Bob that Elantra pays for itself 5 times over every month, it would take a lot to pry it from my hands.
and Thank You for the input when I bought it.
Now buy another Hyundai and be done with it.

And that pains me, because i have a deep hatred for the motor in the P5, and a deep lust for the motor/trans in the Vibe.

If I could find a decent one I would.... but it's getting harder to do. Accents like the wife's car (manual, pw/pl/AC) are hard to find post 02. 00-02 had weak trans and the used market is gone on them.
Friday night ran across a new ad on CL. Went to look at it that night and picked it up Saturday morning.
No pics, but it's a 2008 Kia Rio, power windows/locks/alarm/keyless, CD with aux input with 74k miles. It is an auto, but the wife was fine with that. Body is straight, clean and rust free. Wife steam cleaned the carpets/seats this weekend, I'll swap over the Accent's wheels/tires and put a T-belt on it and we're good to go. Paid $4k for it.
Considering the Accent has somewhere between 230k-250k miles on it and has been dead relieable, It'll be nice to have her in something with less than a third the miles that's got 6 airbags and some semblence of crash protection.
Rented a 2013 Rio for my kid when her school beater popped a hub a few months back. Was pleasantly suprised, well equipped and a nice drive even with an auto. When she completes college it's high on the list for her graduation present, i think she wants a Scion TC though..
I kinda like those Rio's. Dirtbag kid that lives with his parents next to my parents(we call him 'the crow' because he looks like that) has one. Never driven one, but looks like it'd make a decent DD.
It's 1000% better than the accent she has now. It actually handles pretty well for being on bald tires and stock suspension. It's smooth, quiet and actually comfortable for a E36 M3box.
We were planning on checking out an '07 Elantra SE manual 90 minutes from us. But it was $1000 more and it was sitting at 105k miles. It's a nicer car overall, but the price is better with this one.
PLus, I know that we all hate automatics, but the wife made a good point that if one of us has another surgery etc it would be nice to have another automatic in the household that gets more than 21mpg driving around(the truck).
Congrats on the apparently easy-to-predict purchase! Also congrats to all the people who guessed right, which is quite a few. Now i will know how to properly troll Bobzilla and predict his eventual purchase the next time this thread rolls around.
Hey, we were looking at anything that fit the bill. Cobalts, Saturns, P5's etc. There wasn't a single Honda or Toyota worth spending $4k on. The P5 we would have likely purchased was already sold, etc.
My brother has an 09 accent and i have another friend with a rio like yours who's gone to the army. From what ive seen of both cars, they're perfectly decent and drive ok. I think given your steep MPG goals you actually ended up with one of the only things that wouldnt end up disappointing you out of all the stuff you considered.
WEll, the wife completed the first 3 tanks of gas (that she actually tracked mpg on). First tank 38.1, second tank 39.3 and the last tank 36.8. The last tank was 180 miles of back roads and city stop-n-go. She's finally very happy with it.
