Since Bobzilla hasn't popped in here yet, I'll put the vote in for the Korean models.  Sonata or Optima are great used car values.  Reliable as gravity, cheap to buy, roomy inside, good cars.

I know you said no micro cars, but what about the Fit?  Having owned one, I'd swear Honda had figured out how to defy all kinds of scientific laws and principals.  There's no possible way a car that small on the outside can be that big on the inside, but it is.  It's a hatch, stupidly reliable, great mpg, fun, cheap to own and maintain and will carry not only her PA system, but probably all the stage lighting too...and maybe some back up singers.

I'll chime in a bit for Bob, since I've been discussing Sonata's with him in my own "What Car" thread from a week back.  I've been surprised that the 06-10 Sonata's are bigger inside than my 05 TL (or similar Accord/Camry... if they're a bench mark).  Should be able to find a nicely pampered one for under 6.  Also, the Azera looks like it's basically the same car w/ a mild stretch for similar dough.

Not sure if they can fall to the desired budget but my list would be:

  1. VW Tiguan manual
  2. Mazda CX-5 manual
  3. Honda Element manual sounds perfect
  4. Chrysler minivans
  5. Escape/Tribute manual
  6. Dodge Journey
  7. Ford CMax
  8. Pontiac Vue
  9. Mini clubman
  10. +1 on Avalon and Azera
  11. Mitsubishi lancer hatch/wagon of the 2010-16? era.

Used Prius sedan. We drive in deep snow 6 months out of the year and it's fine.  I've put countless configurations of crap in the hatch of that thing too. Dead reliable. No alternator, belts, PS fluid etc. etc. Virtually no maintenance.
