Hey guys,

I am doing the clutch in my REPU, and I have been told that I should have the flywheel resurfaced, but I am not sure it is necessary. Of these two flywheels which one would you use?

The one on the left is the one that came off of the truck, and the one on the right is a spare I have from another engine.

Here they are individually:

Spare:

What do you guys think? Should I get whichever one resurfaced regardless, or do you think they are fine? Both feel smooth to the touch, and the spare had some surface rust on it that I have sanded off a little bit.

I would pick one and get it resurfaced.

You can't really tell by just looking. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get one resurfaced.

Last one I tore out (after I turned the clutch into a bird's nest) looked clean and I as able to determine it was perfectly smooth. It still works great. If you can determine it is not too worn or uneven, it should be fine. Resurfacing will ensure you don't need to pull the transmission out in the near future, though.

This. Seriously.

You are talking about what like $35 to ensure you do the job properly.

and then re-balanced... also while you are at it... get the new pressure plate balanced too

Here is an OEM pressure plate that needed balancing...

So I brought the left flywheel that came out of the truck to a local automotive machine shop, and he hopes to have it done by tomorrow. While I was under the truck I noticed the rear main seal isn't bad. but it also isn't perfect, so I was thinking I should do that as well. Of course I didn't buy one from Mazdatrix when I ordered the clutch, because why would I ever do anything the right way the first time? Anyone know where I can get a Rear main seal quickly? Like in a day or so.

In reply to Mazdax605:

Get the industrial part number(national, NTK, SKF, TIMKEN etc.), go to power transmission shop.

Bought a rear main seal from a friend who rebuilds rotaries in his spare time. He had a spare laying around. Got the resurfaced flywheel back last night, and installed this morning. All back together, but won't start due to a dead battery. Wish me luck with it tomorrow morning.

Truck won't start!! Turns over, and I think I had a cough or a sputter once, but it will not fire. I have fuel, and the bowls are at the proper level. I borrowed a spark tester from my BIL as I can't find my 6 or so that I have. I haven't had a chance to check for spark, but I don't see why I wouldn't have it. I am thinking maybe the plugs are fouled as I have had issue with the truck in the past with fouled plugs. Battery is also pretty weak, and I have been charging it up with my trickle charger. Wish me luck.

Too late, but I was going to say, take the stock one, clean it up and use it. In the past, I have replaced many, many clutches and never resurfaced a flywheel. Keep in mind that removing material from the face "can" alter the clutch operation. OK, I'm old school.

I have fuel, and spark. No fire. Plugs are really wet!! Ordered new ones today from the local NAPA.

I finally had a chance to mess around with the REPU yesterday after work for a little while. Put the new NGK plugs in it, and tried for a while before the engine fired up. When it did it was spewing large clouds of white smoke. I think when I removed the intake manifold before draining the coolant made a larger mess than I had thought, and I had a bunch of coolant in the motor. Not a good mix, and I am lucky I didn't damage the motor. It runs, and the clutch works, but grabs really close to the floor unlike before with the other worn clutch. I hope it can be adjusted some, or maybe it will wear in a bit. I hope it isn't due to the flywheel being resurfaced, but I feel it may be.

You work fast.

When they resurfaced the flywheel, they took an equal(or slightly greater) cut off the pressure plate mounting face, right?

Probably just an adjustment issue though. You generally need to readjust pedal free travel if it's adjustable when messing with clutches.

Yes the machine shop took a little more off of the pressure plate surface.
