I got home at 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning and got some sleep before heading back for the finish. Slept like a log last night.

We just did Indian buffet for lunch today, and soon after getting home, I started to feel sleepy....

I got to the track at around 10 am Saturday, and got home at around 3 pm on Sunday, excluding the quick trips up the street to take care of the puppy dog. I am feeling quite accomplished but, like David, Indian buffet has made me quite sleepy. Ironic though because at the track I slept like a baby in my tent. Maybe I just need to play race car sounds before bed from now on.

In reply to Paris Van Gorder :

I slept in a van at the Rolex a long, long time ago. We got a parking spot right at pit out. (That tells you how long ago this was.)

What woke us up? The relative quiet of the full-course cautions.

I feel like I pulled an all nighter so I could post live updates throughout the race.

Wait a minute ...

Sleeping outside NASCAR turn 1, the one thing that always makes me up is the minute and a half of quiet during the FCYs!  I sleep like a baby with the constant roar of the cars, though.

We got in around 1pm or so today and I just got finished unloading the camper.  I'm going to pause before cleaning and winterizing to have dinner - we're going to feast on leftovers from Sat. night!

I will say that I'm much more rested now than I was when we arrived in Daytona.  The trip home was only marred with a little rain in Tennessee, so it's a pretty relaxing drive.  The trip down was a white-knuckle trip that was just exhausting.

My plan: Be in bed by 10:00 tonight. Maybe even 9:30. I should take out the trash and wrap up my writing to make that happen. :)

We landed just after 9pm last night and were home by 10pm.  My 10 y.o. went to school today like a trooper with zero complaints.  I took a vacation day today, and I'm planning to go to sleep VERY soon.

What a fantastic weekend!

That was always the case for me all those years we camped out right in front of the GRM tent.

It was cold that year that we slept in the van, too. I was sleeping in the driver’s seat. When I’d wake up, I’d run the engine for a bit to get the heat going.

The cars got progressively dirtier and beat as the night went on. I recall waking up and seeing a yellow Nissan 240SX dragging half its bodywork. It was still running, though, so we knew it would soon reenter the fray.

A few years ago I camped out at the speedway thinking I would like to be at the track for the entire 24 hours at least once. Once was all I needed. My camping shelter of choice, a 2-door MK6 GTI, that turned out to not be my best decision. I am glad I tried it at least once but I think since I live 15 mins away from the track sleeping at home for a few hours is going to be my plan going forward.

I wasn't out there for as long as y'all were over the weekend, but I'm still whipped. I was mostly doing a few hours at a time, but for like a week+ straight with the Roar. I know Florida hasn't had the same kind of cold they have up north or even in the panhandle, but that sub-50-degree stuff plus the wind just beats the life out of me. I've been moisturizing every inch of exposed skin since then and I still look like an old fisherman.

In reply to JG Pasterjak :

I have worn gloves maybe four times in my life, none of which were in Florida. My poor hands were crying for help by the first 30 minutes on Friday. So I caved and dug out gloves from the depths of my storage for the rest of the weekend.

On Saturday we left just after the fireworks, as it was starting to get cold enough that it just wasn't that much fun. Got back to the condo and hit the hot tub for a bit before hitting the sack. Sunday we were back at the track by 10 am. Man, what a great race!

Monday we were up at 8 am, then went to Merritt Island to look at the birds, then headed to Orlando for our flight back to Seattle. I got to bed 1 am FLA time, so that was a long day.

Today I just have a mild post-Daytona hangover, but since I've retired I don't have to drag myself to work!

Feeling more human today, too: Asleep by 10:00, up at 8:00.

You know, I didn’t feel that bad, even at 4:00 in the morning. Being down in the pits and garages likely kept me out of the wind. Layering up–a lot–also helped. I felt like I could have gone even later, but I knew I’d pay for it Monday.

I left the track a little before 5:00, putting me home at like 5:08 a.m. My wife came down the stairs soon after I got home. What are you doing up so early? I asked.

You’re just getting home? she replied.

She got home from the track around 2:00 a.m., so it was a long day for her, too.
