hopefully simple question with a simple cheap answer.
the 302 ranger is almost in progress, except engine is a 5.0 with the TBI style injection from an 84 mark VII. we need a plain old normal distributor to run with a carb.
what can be used? my buddy said he compared an old 302 one with a newer EFI one and there are differeces in the shaft and stuff. he could be totally stupid and wrong though.
I'm pretty sure the normal and TFI distributors are direct swaps as far as bolting up.

Dump the stock Disty and get an HEI model for the engine. Can be had on Ebay for less than 1000. I did that for both the 302 and 351 engines and do not regret it. Took out all of the magic boxes required for Ford distys and cleaned up the engine bay. It is bigger than the ford unit and could affect the intake. I am running a 4 barrel carb and had to run a 9" filter in place of a 14".
Can you spot it in the picture.

The 84 Mark SHOULD have a flat tappet cam. If so you can use any old ford distributor. The 85 up roller motors use a different gear that rides on a different diameter shaft, so you can't just swap gears. 85 5 speed carbed Mustangs use a regular distributor with the steel gear. 86 and up cars don't have mechanical advance mechanisms so they, at least, won't work well with a carb. So you need an 85 Mustang 5 speed distributor, which really means buy the ebay hei. They can be had for less than $70.
57 bux shipped? damn this is cheap.

so just buy it, 1 wire, and go just like a GM HEI swap? that's so easy my buddy can't screw it up.
