I have my truck in the shop and I need the GRM wisdom.
They told me that I had a couple of bad injectors which is why it is in the shop. They called today and said that when they pulled the injectors there was coolant in the injector cup. For only $3500 additional they would pull the heads and have a machine shop press in new cups. I asked what is the risk of not doing this and he said you could get diesel in the coolant. I asked, do I have any now and he said no......
The truck is an 2001 F350 and without a doubt the most expensive vehicle I have ever owned. And honestly I am tired of hearing "oh they will last forever". Yea if you replace every part.
So can any of you pour a bit of wisdom out of your brain? Would you have this fixed?
Thanks! Rick

Thanks for the link. I did search that site and nobody said anything about removing the heads. I also did a post.
Thanks again might GRMers
A couple bad injectors at the same time? Sounds a bit fishy to me. I have a 7.3 and it's very common for the injector/glow plug harness that is inside the valve covers to go bad and more than one or all of the injectors on that side will not work. The truck will start and run rough with no power. I needed a new harness on the drivers side at about 150,000 miles and have a spare already when the pass side goes. The valve cover gasket can usually be reused and is the expensive part, the harness inside the cover isn't much. Sounds like your shop might be taking you for a ride.
No need to pull the heads to replace the injector cups.
I'm guessing you got a milkshake in the crankcase?

If you plan to keep the truck, I would have it fixed, but confirm if they can be done without pulling the heads. Think of it like a leaking head gasket, it's only going to get worse with time.
Some injector cups can be done without pulling the head, but some need to have the head pulled. If I recall Detroit S60 can be done without pulling the head, but Cummins N14 would need to have the heads pulled to do the cups.
I would ask how they tested the injectors to determine they are bad, and what values were out of spec. They may just be going by appearance or assuming they are bad if the cups are bad.
As for multiple injector needing to be done at the same time, if contamination (water, etc) caused the failure definitely possible. Even if due to wear, they all have the same mileage so if ones worn enough to be problem I wouldn't be surprised for others to follow shortly after. But make sure they actually tested to determine that.
Find a shop that knows what they are doing with that engine, maybe even an international authorized shop.

Thanks all for your input. I sent a link to my thread on the FTE site. Instead of $3500 they are now doing the fix for $150.......
