Hey guys I managed to locate a Ford 8.8 Posi rear with disk brakes for a really good price that I'm thinking of grabbing for the Olds.
The brackets have been removed so I'm wondering what would be needed to fit this into the Olds? Will the brackets from a Ford 9 inch conversion kit work?
Make your own, just put one into the S10 challenger, 4 link and panhard with coilovers. Not to difficult if you can weld.
The rear in question has had all brackets removed except for the sway bar (comes with that as well). Should I hold out for one that has not be modified at all? This is one rear I more than likely could find in my local yard without to much difficulty. Though I'm not sure how easy it will be to find the posi disk brake combo...
All P71's have a disc brake 8.8's and most have LSD's. All 94-10 Mustang GT's have disc brake 8.8's with LSD's too. They're pretty common.
In reply to P71:
the sway bar mounts to the lower control arms not the rear end. so the lower control arm brackets are still there. then the uppers mount to the top of the"chunk". Until 2005 GT came out. They are common, there are a lot of 94-04 v8 cars. 95-95 a the more narrow axles than 96 up.
It could be out of an explorer.
What kind of brackets do you need? A&A mfg out of MI
Has real nice stuff, cheaper then i can fab it for.

I still don't see why anyone would stick an 8.8 Ford in a Cutty when 8.5" rears are available.

The 8.8 axle tubes come in two different sizes depending on the application. The 28 splined car based 8.8 has smaller tubes than does the 31 spline truck based units. Just keep that in mind when you order the brackets. Chances are that if you picked up an 8.8 that someone all ready removed the brackets from, it's a 3.73 or 4.11 geared 31 splined unit from an Explorer. Those are the ones the Mustang and Jeep guys go crazy for, and they seem to be the majority of the abandoned projects out there. Also keep in mind that the tubes and axle shafts come in different lengths. The Explorer about 3" longer on one side. The truck based ones are generally offset and the car based ones are generally centered. Also keep in mind that there is a 1 inch offset built into the housing itself, so even if the shafts are centered, the driveshaft isn't. Now that everybody is confused, what did the rear end come out of and do you need to narrow it? There is a web site called the ranger station that does a great job listing sizes and codes for 8.8 swaps.

Because the 8.5 would cost me $750+ and the 8.8 could be had for less than $200?
tr8todd the car it came from was a 2000 Crown Vic so 31 spline axles, posi and disc brakes.
