Hey guys,

I know this isnt a pick up forum by no means but they have all failed me. I have an '87 f-150 two wheel drive pickup. It has a 300 six, its fuel injected (this was the first year for the 6). I got the truck about 3 years ago as a present from my then girlfiriend, now wife. It runs great when its cold...but when it gets up to operating temperature it develps a slight miss (nothing bad enough to affect the running, just noticable when setting at a stop light or in traffic) and wont restart until it cools down. By accident I found that if i unhook the timing spout it will restart. (so in true grassroots colors I hooked up a toggle switch in the cab in case I killed it or something). When I pull the codes using a VOM it sends multiple electrical failure...

I have replaced the coil, multiple relays, distributor, halls effect device (pick up coil), TFI module...I think that is about it. I have the timing advanced about as far it can go and still run and it seems to start easier when hot but still not reliably. (unless the timing spout is unhooked)

any ideas??

The first thing I would do is put timing back to stock.

My truck is a 1996 with the EFI 300..

The ECU controls ignition timing but it uses the distributors base setting as a starting point. Reset the timing to stock (you're doing this with the proper wire disconnected right?), pull the ECU fuse for a minute or so and re-start.

Good luck.

How do the plug wires look? When's the last time they were replaced? What about plugs?

The plugs wires etc are in good shape, they arent to terribly old. Plugs are in good shape I regaped them a while back (when I installed the new distributor) I will have to try the ECM reset I have tried to pull the battery terminal off and hold the brake but didnt have any luck that way so I will try the fuse.

by the way after I replaced the distributor I set the timing back to stock and still had the problem...Also when the truck is hot is has no spark. It acts like the timing is not advancing when its hot...that is the main reason I advanced the timing to where it is to try and mimick what the computer would do when starting the engine.
