Can the forward gears in a trans take that?

Should be able to, not too different to engine braking in low gears.

Honestly, a large part of wanting to keep the original transaxle is not wanting to give up shifting the car manually... it just feels wrong to lose that on the car. But, regardless I'm far more likely to try and pick up a whole wrecked EV to pull from than try and put it together from other sources.

From what I've read, working out the halfshafts is one of the more challenging parts mechanically. I will be changing out the wheels regardless since finding tires for the stock ones is getting more challenging and if I'm updating everything else, why not the wheels as well- so it may work out to be easier to change the hubs as well.

My Google-Fu yesterday turned up at least four EV-converted DeLoreans yesterday. Three with LEAF drivetrains and one getting a Tesla drivetrain.

I wouldn't say it's "easy", but in terms of conversions the Leaf seems like a good choice and the guys who have done it would probably be really good resources. I'd try to find contact information for them and reach out. With particular emphasis on the questions:

If you had to do it over again, would you?

What would you have done differently, knowing what you know now?

I would put a LS with a DCT from a 135/335. Would be hilarious and the dct is becoming a common enough on swaps to make it seamless I would think.

The transaxle in the DMC is similar to a Porsche wear the output is internally routed back up near the input. Unlike the DCT which is a standard Front engine/RWD transmission layout.
