Well, as promised, I have another report of what it is to actually live with the FRS as an early adopter.

3000 miles idown the road and three months later.

The good news is that you just never get tired of driving the car. The road manners and way it comports itself on the road do not stop being fun the entire time you are in the car. It is a good long distance touring car and if I can keep my foot out of it, the mileage is better than the Protege.

The bad news is that either the early adoption or the built down to a price factor is starting to show.

Known and reported tailight issue where it condenses has cropped up. Won't stay condensed long enough to show dealer, so no fix.

Radio has a static issue whenever I stop. Go figure. Not high on priorities, but annoying.

Synchros are slow in second. Klunks a lot especially when cold.Miata box this is not.

I have not developed any love for six speed boxes. In any car. Wish it was a five speed.

LOTS of drivetrain lash.

Noisy AC condenser cut-in and out.

The car is light. This lightness had to come from giving up something like sound insulation. Hard rain and gravel roads will let you know about that. NOISY!

The traction control has a bad habit of re-engaging itself from full OFF to full ON when making abrupt entries into a trafic stream. The sudden loss of power is un-nerving when you have fast moving traffic arriving on your tail. Need to learn more about this and how to replicate consistently so I can show dealer service department. Most consistemly done (but not always) when exiting a gravel road intending to hang the ass end out on a right hand turn.

Scion is not clear on whether or not the lack of TPS will default the tracton control to ON all the time or not. This in relation to a thread I started about running snows without TPS.

Sounds like a bleeping tractor. Subie guys like this. Me, not so much. Maybe if I get rid of the retarded ricer/fanboi noisemaker into the cabin it will be better. I am an ld guy, so this might be subjective.

Never heard a car crinkle and ping as much as this thing when you put it away hot. It is a literal symphony of cooling noises. No idea what the hell that is about. Disconcerting to some extent.

Needs real tires.

No steel wheels available for winter rims. Not sure why? Going to have to run alloys and run the risk of snow packing in rims that makes for unbalanced ride.

While the above might seem like foder for the FRS haters, and sure to be quoted out of context, let me assure you that I still much prefer driving the FRS to the bloated pigs that present themselves as competition. Heavy cars can most certainly be made to go fast and a go around corner, but they can't be make to handle well. If that last sentence goes over your head, so be it.

Much the same as I would forgive a Lotus for shedding its parts en-route to just about anywere, the FRS has that charm.

I'll give you another report once I have some winter driving on the thing. Should be interesting.

If Aisin-Warner made the transmission, actually it is.

In reply to Knurled:

Yeah, I was under the impression that this is the same gearbox as the SE Miata/RX-8/Altezza RS200. I have to say I really have been disappointed in the quality of this unit in the RX-8. The shift forks are really weak, syncros are not that great, plus there's a ton of lash, as mentioned.

Sorry to hear the Miata going downhill. I have serious case of rose tinted glasses when I think about my 1990. As a good friend once said, thats not a shifter, that a clitoris!

No wonder so many guys think Miatas are girl cars then, they can't figure out how those things work.

(I'll stop here, I promise.)

Thanks for the update. Keep 'em coming. I'm giving serious consideration to steering my girlfriend into one of these when she needs a new car in a year or two*, so I'm definitely interested in long term reports like this.

*She gets the sportscars, I get the utility vehicles. The sacrifices we make...

I enjoy reading these updates. Thank you.

So is it as exciting as when the 1970 240Z came out?

Just to let you know how old I really am, I have been driving since the introduction of the 1970 240Z and my Dad bought one when we were living in Puerto Rico. The car followed us to Canada, Europe and them Florida. That was a pretty epic car in my mind.

Please do not let me scare you away from this car. I am trying to present an objective view of what it has been like to be an early adopter of this car.

In my real job I take things from design to market, and I know and appreciate what it must be like to do so with something as complicated as an automobile.

My next review will most likely include some opinion on the dealer treatment when I mention the minor issues that I am having. If needs be, I will fill the tailight with water and put a goldfish in there to get that one resolved.

Condensers make no noise you can hear. Ever. Condeneser fan? Yes. Condenser? No.

Acually, you are wrong. Everything in the universe makes noise if it contains matter. Some people just are not listening.

My WRX made a lot of noise as it cooled down. Must be a Subaru thing.

Have a friend with a BRZ, haven't heard any complaints. He has run it in a hill climb and plans on ice racing . He had a Civic SI so quite a difference.

Are you actually suffering from excessive drivetrain lash?

I wonder this, because my buddy with his brand new 2013 Genesis suffers the same thing.

I am being led to believe this is actually the fault of the dual mass flywheels manufacturers are installing on everything because somehow, even with the absurdly small amount of manual transmission cars sold worldwide, there are still a decent part of them that can't drive a stick worth E36 M3

FYI - the six-speed never shifted as well in the NB Miata as the NA/NB 5-speeds. It's better in the NC. But the 'box that gave the Miata such a good reputation for shifting is the 5-speed.

Thanks for the update. The cooldown pinging might be due to a bunch of cats - I haven't seen the exhaust system, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were three or four including some right off the ports. Those critters run hot.

Huh just learned about dual-mass flywheels, another way to make a traditional manual setup suck along with the clutch regulator valve. There are single-mass aftermarket flywheels to fix it though.

Good update. I have barely seen any of these on the road yet. I've seen a grand total of one and that was on a dealer's lot.

They do seem like the car we've been clamoring for in a lot of ways.

I have this feeling that "dual mass" means that during year six or so, it will take two times the mass of money that the car is worth to replace this wonder of engineering.

Not if you replace it with a conventional flywheel.

I dont know if i am just spoiled or what but i am used to manual transmissions that work perfectly with tons of miles on them.. I dont know if ive ever owned a manual transmission that didnt have at least 170k on it, and most have been over 200k and still working properly.

So i think i would be fuming if i had ANY issues on a 3month old transmission. Like, buy-back pissed if they didnt do something about it.

The only cars ive ever had 2nd gear synchro issues with were my neons, which have/had ~225k and ~265k on those trannies, respectively.. And they still act completely normal whenever im not drag racing..

Those are actually pretty good.

The fact that the first one shows a lady driving a manual trans Buick is even better.
