needs engine... arrgh... I could get this for $700... But do I want to? This isn't a bad engine for the usual reasons... Threw a rod. Hole in block. Means NO CORE... Think think think...

If it helps the 2.5 is exactly the same as that in a base Altima. Its definitely cheaper to source engines that way than to search for one that came out of an SE-R.
BTW - vote #2 (edit - Vote #3 - sorry Swank) for a VQ swap. If you can wade through the garbage on some of the Sentra boards, its actually pretty well documented and most of the kinks have been worked out over the years. Good luck.
I wouldnt buy it just to put another 2.5 in it. You'll only end up with something worth what your time and money adds up to, so it's not really a winner unless you a get a sweetheart deal on a motor and work fast and well. BUT, for putting a vq35 in it i would say HELL YES.
Have you tried Car-Part.com?

Internet wisdom (hahaha) says its about a 50 lbs difference.
Did anyone try a 2nd gen QR swap yet?
Seeing how many QR25's blow-up, I wouldn't trust a 700$ scrapyard engine.
YMMV

These guys seem to do ok with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQx-NLtIuCI

Jeepers, that noise is quite nice.
I award Ben the prize for beating me to the irony. People think turbo setups are magically weightless for some reason.

I've seen numerous B15 Sentras with VQ35s. Would they really be much better than simply buying an Altima? Don't know much about Sentras.
I just think if you can put one of those in a Versa that is where you enter OMGWTF territory.
I wish there was a sentra hatchback then I would be sold on buliding one.
edit:Just watched that video, wow.

yep...uncorked VQs at full song produce a delicious symphony indeed. A full custom RWD VQ 2nd Gen Infiniti G20 is definitely on my (post mega-millions winning)bucket list.
OTOH,a VQ swap might be worth while just for the VQ noise.
Why do the VQs sound so much better than nearly every ither V6?
I've been thinking about this, and I think if you play your cards right this may be possible for CHALLENGE MONEY.
DOO EET.

Believe it or not, even the 2.5 QRs sound pretty good a full song. (With the right intake/header/exhaust combo that is) My old SE-R sounded really nice when it was running wide open, especially after the secondary intake runners opened up.
Arrggghhhhhh... Now I am thinking way too much about this...
Quick question... Where would one procure car insurance for something like this? If I can't drive it on the road there is no point in doing it....
Car insurance for.....?
A clear titled car with a hole in the block? Where do you normally get car insurance?

Well, it would be a Sentra with a swapped engine....
So? If you're really worried about getting the money back out of it, declared value policy.
If you're looking at this from a "cheapass fun beater" perspective, then who cares. If you wreck it, total it out, buy it back, part it out, or dump into the next shell.
I don't own a single stock car. My insurance company doesn't know this. It may very well bite me in the ass with the Escort or MSM if they're wrecked, and i'll be looking at a declared value policy for them in the future...
But for the MX6? Meh. If the car isn't worth anything, who cares?
