The factory fuel tank in my 1994 Honda Accord champcar has suffered a fatal blow. A replacement is pretty cheap; however, is there any benefit to upgrading to a fuel cell?

If so - what are somethings I should take into consideration to make the change?

Fuel pump and filter change.

Depending on location, impact worthiness. Can place inside some cage structure.

Probably not as big of a concern on an Accord, but I know a lot of people who went back to a factory fuel tank in Miatas as the fuel cell in the trunk thing messes up the car's balance pretty significantly, especially when full.

You usually can't fit a fuel cell into the ideal location in a production based car, so you're probably looking at undesirable weight balance changes.  How big a factor that is for an Accord I don't know.

Fuel cel may enable more fuel, which may be desirable for cheap endurance racing depending on rules.

One consideration is that an original style tank is forever while most organizations mandate that you change the fuel cell every 5 years (apparently the bladders degrade).

I think champ limits theirs to stock or smaller. Lemons can run up to 24 gallon cell, no limit if factory equipped

Champ is +/- 2 gallons of the factory size. A factory Accord fuel tank is 17 gallons.

The last two races we've been getting a lot of fuel starvation issues with upwards of 5 gallons left in the tank. Thats with a hydramat and a brand new fuel pump. The tank itself also has some deterioration issues.

The other thing with a Miata is that if you're in a wreck bad enough to damage the factory tank fire is unlikely to be a concern.

With the Accord the factory fuel tank is in a pretty good spot to keep weight balance in check. It's mid-to-rear and centered. After doing some more research based on what you guys have said, I'm probably just gonna go with a rockauto tank with some additional Walbro MP-1x pickups. Much cheaper alternative
