I dunno what transmission you'd mate to it, but how about an aircooled Porsche boxer 6, in the front?

This. 4G63s are dirt cheap, easy to make power, and sound pretty good for a 4 banger. Basically the SBC of the import world, parts are extremely easy to come by.

There is a machinist that makes one-off bell housings for T56 and other common swap trans that bolt up to a 4G63

Really not into the flat or semi-gloss paint jobs but this 32 pick up featured on the Summit Racing catalog pretty much has all the right proportions in my opinion and also has a Ford small block for bonus points. This vehicle in any color other then semi gloss black would be perfect!

Although I certainly respect the idea of doing something different!

For angering crotchety old men at car shows, I like the idea of a rotary - particularly if you did a lakes pipe style easily uncorked exhaust, or a Honda K or J series. Although picturing it with Subaru cylinder heads poking through each side of the hood might be even better.

Came here to say rotary. Bridgeport/peripheral port will get you about 300 of the angriest, fire-shootingest horsepower you can imagine. And I can't even imagine the rage the "can-of-angry bees" exhaust note will incite at the right kind of show.

That's "plane" not plain. I know they sound the same. That's why many people have trouble with spelling. I still do.

Sorry, SWMBO was reciting a honeydo list at me while I was typing this... that included picking up some cream cheese... plane...

Falls a bit short on your hp requirements but I've always though a Daimler Dart V8 would look great in a hot rod.

Remember that a Model A has a pretty small engine compartment. Even something like a small block Chevy is a tight fit and generally requires relocating the firewall (and therefore reducing interior space, which is also at a premium.) Putting a long engine in there (straight 6, V12, whatever) will most likely require an extended frame. Anything can be done, but it will depend on your fab skills and budget. Personally, if I were to go with a foreign engine I'd look at something like a 4 cylinder Alfa, it's not anywhere near your desired power rating but it will be peppy, and it's one of the best looking engines out there.

Came here to say this, but i maybe biased

Jag v12 would be cool, very pretty motors especially if you spend a billion hours polishing one. Frenchd should be here any moment and shout ideas about them and twin turbo for extra effect.

Jeep 4.0 with the 4.2 crank and rods makes a 4.7 that is supposed to put out 300hp with plenty of torque. They had plenty of manuals behind them too
