The other Volvo/mod motor thread has me thinking about this. At this point, it's just a thought exercise, as I have enough going on that I don't need another project. But I like the idea of something like an 850 wagon with the FWD 4.6.
I have some 4.6 experience, but no Volvo experience. Any idea if the engine would even fit?
Why not the Yamaha V8 used in the XC90?
Or just crank up the boost on an 850 Turbo and drive it the same day?
In reply to Appleseed :
Overhead cam engines are wide. How about the Impala 5.3 (I know, not the most robust transmission)? Got to be lots of them out there, and LS engines are a known entity.
Roadkill garage built an Impala with one at each end. If I recall, the transmissions were built by Level 10.
Engine Masters tv show after Roadkill did a Boom motor with a stock block, rods and piston LS3? I remember they did open the rings to .030
With good heads intake and turbo made insane power. First pull was 1100 plus hp.
Transmissions and transaxles need to catch up to what engines can produce now.

ls4
you use a 4t80e from any northstar Cadillac. you have to remove an ear on the block but it is a much stronger transaxle.

Yeah, there are definitely more practical choices. But Continental engines are a dime a dozen, and this is just sort of a "can it be done?" at this point.

I love it. Do it!
I have ideas about getting a Continental and putting on the cheapest coilovers known to man.

I don't know about the other volvo thread but why use the ford stuff to begin with? The 4.4 from later volvos would be a fairly direct swap to an earlier p2 volvo and doesn't give up anything stock for stock. It's a smaller bank angle so a more compact engine. The fwd 5.3 LS even has an easier path because it bolted to 4t65s and there are stock mounts/axles for 4t65s in a bunch of s80s and early xc90s. So i see that mod motor as being far from the easiest unless there's something else i don't know about.
B5244T5 engine ('05-09 S60 2.4 turbo) and all the boost.
Or a 2.3 turbo (5cyl) with pistons and rods and all the boost.
Either one will make more power than a 4.6 Mod motor or a 5.3, because where you gonna put a supercharger or turbo on a V8 in that tiny-ass engine bay.

The engine itself is almost always the cheap and easy part of a swap in a modern vehicle.
You might have more money in axles than in the drivetrain. Although, to that point, Volvo designed the chassis for the Five Hundred and other similar large chassis so there may be a way to cross pollinate junkyard-style, maybe.

Lot of people in here making perfectly rational comments about which engines would be a better swap.
I also like the idea of using the whole Continental subframe in the back of something, a la the Shogun.
A lot of this is just "working from home due to coronavirus gives me time to ponder bad ideas."
In reply to Will :
Understandable, but pondering if also requires pondering if should.
I do wonder if there is some way to use the Ford transmission with some mix of parts, but I don't know Ford bearing/axle sizes that well. Either way you would have to start with an S80 (significantly longer engine bay than S60, which had a much longer engine bay than the 850) and you might have to move the firewall and radiator for clearance. The DOHC mod motor is an extremely wide engine and it was a cram fit in the Continental, which had a very long engine bay.
For reference, it doesn't look like the engine/turbo in my S60R will fit in a P80 chassis without firewall massaging and radiator moving, and it is an inline five that is much narrower than any Mod motor.

As I said, I have some experience with the mod motor. I have a 32 valve in my 57 T-Bird, so I know how big they are. I just have no idea how big a Volvo engine bay is, so thanks for that info. If the 850 isn't practical, maybe this becomes "what interesting FWD vehicle can swallow a 4.6?" Or "What not-interesting FWD vehicle becomes interesting with a 4.6?"
Some research this weekend showed that people have successfully crammed the Continental engine in a 96-? Taurus, but that's a pretty miserable vehicle regardless of engine.

I think another way to frame this question is 'which FWD boat is enough better than the Continental to justify the swap?' because if you're okay with a FWD boat in the first place, what's wrong with the continental? It's nearly a town car except it's faster. I think they look pretty ok to begin with. There's a green one near my house with some 18 or 19" 5spoke rims and i think it looks good.
In reply to Will :
The whole cradle should fit in the back of an 850 wagon. Perversely this is probably the easy way, since you don't have to figure out steering or firewall clearance or radiator clearance...
The P80 (850/V70) is not particularly long in general, it is remarkably compact for its interior space. Underhood the exhaust is practically under the cowl ( and the firewall isn't very far behind the cowl) and the intake is quite close to the radiator. For reference the 5cyl turbo sitting on my engine stand is 19" from the exhaust side of the head to the front of the intake manifold, so with turbo maybe 6" more width. 25"?
There is a ton more room in the S80, but then, the S80 also got the (extremely loosely) Yamaha derived 4.4l V8. Which as has been mentioned, is 60 degree.
I think a Ford Escort would be interesting with the RWD V8 Shogun treatment. If keeping it in the front, how about shoving it in a Cadillac as a hilarious role reversal? At least the 4.6 is more reliable than the Northstar.
People on this thread keep saying Continental and engine together and all I can envision is a flat head inline 6in a Diamond T truck, or maybe an aircooled flat 4 in a plane. Oh, you mean a Lincoln, er Ford engine.

I had those same dumb ideas.
I like the continental gtsio 520 h . They are notorious for cracking the case between the #5 cylinder and alternator when operated by a ham handed ape . Probably not what one would want in a car

It’s been done to an even greater extreme. There was a 1980s Ford Escort at the 2012 Challenge with a 4.6 from a Continental in the back, and a Zetec up front.
Drop it in the bed of a Ranger and have a mid-engine v8? But this really just makes me want to know if a continental can be tweaked to be fun.

Cause they're fragile, crazy expensive ($15k) and sought after due to the fragility. They sound cool but I'd strongly recommend against using one for anything other than selling to a hapless volvo owner that need$$$$$ one.
