So is the 1978-1981 A-body the same as a '82-'88 G-body? And will suspension parts for one G-body fit any other G-body? Can a G-body be made to handle for Challenge money?

1978-88 are all the same chassis wise. In 1982 the A-body designation was given to a new FWD chassis (think Celebrity) and the old A-body became the G-body. G-body was the designation for the existing Monte Carlo/Grand Prix since 1970 (69 for the Grand Prix).
As for handling, there are plenty of cheap parts for the G-body, just look at circle track suppliers, they call it the Metric chassis. A couple I use are Speedway Motors and Lefthander Chassis.
the 78-80 A bodies had 7/16 wheel studs, and the 81-88 got 12mm wheel studs.. they changed the front wheel bearings at the same time for some reason. otherwise, they are the same chassis, with the only real difference being the extra tab welded to the driver's side frame rail starting in '84 when they added the TH200-4r overdrive trans to the option list.
