I never dove into Lemons or other cheap rallies - but how tight are they on the $500 budget. I know I hear about $5000 dollar "$500" lemons cars all the time. I have a hard time believing most of the junk in those photos was only $500.

But now I'm off to look at CL for $500 autos anyway....even though I'm in Georgia.

EDIT: aaaaaand just like that...$500 SCRAMBLER anyone?! http://macon.craigslist.org/cto/5695424413.html

Oh man, all the way across the country for me BUT I've got at least two buddies in the Seattle area who would totally be down. Email about to be sent...

Nobody is enforcing any "rules". its a run-what-ya-brung get together. The $500 is a suggestion to fit in with the theme.

So it sounds like $500 really means "janky and not polished", which could readily describe a lot of cars here with much more than $500 into them (especially if going with a "well, I already had it" kind of thing).

From the FB page:

The Gambler said: Hey guys getting swarmed with interest about next year's Gambler 500, being that the 2016 event just happened we have almost a year to go. Looking into adding some new events to accommodate but if you're outside the NW you could look into starting your own local Gambler 500 Run and we can publicize here. We've been getting a lot of questions about rules and we typically don't take ourselves too seriously so they're more like "guidelines". 1. Safety: always obey the law and be overly courteous. 2. Vehicle: "reasonably purchased for $500" or "spectacularly impractical or historically unreliable" i.e. Firetrucks, Deloreans, Ice Cream truck, 6x6 Pinzgauer etc. Just remember there's always a lot of bad dirt roads. 3. Equipment: you are responsible for everything you need, we will not provide any support. You may get it from other Gamblers in the field but we ain't your mamas. 4. Navigation: bring proper navigation software on a tablet/computer with downloaded maps. This rally is not about speed it is navigating beater rigs through tough environment. Bring paper maps too. 5. Registration: There has never been any registration involved because nobody is responsible or collecting fees. This is fun because it is safe, legal and free everyone volunteering to participate must follow these parameters or they are immediately asked to leave. 6. Environment: We enjoy the outdoors and hold ourselves to a high standard to maintain and improve the trails we use. Everyone hauls their own junk out and there's an award for those that go above and beyond. This is not a race, it's a navigational contest with a bunch of friends in cruddy weird cars. If you want to race, go to a track. This is amazing safe fun and we want to keep it that way. Much love, see you in 2017 ABG "always be gamblin"

I'd like to do something like this in February on the east cost. Anybody want to set that up?

More from the organizers said: Ok, I've finally got a beer in my hand so I can write this post out for you bastards. 1. You need a Wizard of Waypoints that's willing to set the GPS waypoints staggered through rural/mountainous area that's mostly trail or rocky dirt roads. Typically 10-25 a day. More challenging the better, you'd be surprised what a Geo Prizm can do out there. We typically travel 250-300 miles the first day, and 200-250 the second. Make camp in a remote location that allows it. Print them out and keep secret until rally day. 2. Teams will need to know general area/quarter of the state so they can download maps to GPS program like MotionX, GPS kit, Inroute or Googlemaps. 3. They receive list of waypoints as they leave the staging area/start in a staggered start platform (every 2, 3, 4 or 5 minutes) they can then plan route while they have some data reception but here we lose it pretty quick and rely on GPS locator in tablet or phone. While obeying traffic laws the teams find the GPS waypoints and take a screenshot and picture of their car at the waypoint to check in. We're not picky just as long as we can prove they were there. Their time they get to camp is recorded and overall times from the two days is added. Going forward we are making the fifth place time the winner, this discourages speed, encourages strategic gamesmanship and puts the focus on navigation. To be honest though, nobody should care about winning, the most fun is helping other Gamblers and driving weird cars in weird places. 4. Camp is always the best part, share stories from the day, car shenanigans and drink some pops. 5. Setting a good course is key to a good time, away from campers and people. If you do come across people enjoying the outdoors, always drive half the speed limit and be overly courteous, that's an easy way to get kicked out of our group. Leave the woods better than you found it, we live in a wonderful country where this kinda thing is possible and on public land. Speaking of, STAY ON TRAILS. 6. You're participating under your own volition, you are beholden to all the laws that govern us the same as any other day. There is no special pass or protection because you're playing a funny game, don't be a dick and ruin everything. This is not about speed, this is about navigation. 7. Have fun, be cool. Costumes and themes are encouraged, chubbies.com has cool swag and blew us up with the video, no affiliation with opposuits.com but they got cool stuff too. ABG

But I don't want to do it alone.... Although I may do it and write about it later.

It sure seems to be spreading. Several events have sprung up across the country and a new forum!
