I spent last weekend crawling around some cars wearing my nice new Puma Speedcats.
Usually a pair of ratty sandals in the summer or one of my worn-out pairs of DCs in the winter or when I am welding or doing something particularly nasty.
Work "boots" are Nike Shox. Far and away the most comfortable all-day shoes I have. I knew I went to work for a good place when the other guy I work with wears the same thing I do. Untucked black polos, slightly ripped up jeans with the bottoms cut off, and Nike Shox. Every day. We joke that its the official uniform of Metcast.

I get a new pair of steel toes shoes issued every year from work. The old one which are hardly even broken in become my garage shoes. I guess im not spending enough time in the garage since after a year in the garage, they still aren't worn out. I used to wear flip flops in the garage until I got a huge laceration from a jagged piece of rusty steel and stitches to go along with it.
Whenever I buy new shoes, the old ones become my wrenching/lawn work shoes (I wouldn't call them garage shoes because I've never worked in my garage- my family always ends up using it as a storage room). My current pair is a set of old Vans. I also have a pair of 4 or 5 year old Timberland Pro titanium-toed boots I bought on clearance from Sears when I used to work there. I usually wear them when working with something heavy.
I was going to post some snarky comment about how one could probably tell who wore what shoes by the type of work they do in the garage, but then I remembered the thread on a VW forum about a guy in Thailand hand hammering and flame welding most of of a splitty double cab back together.
Dude has 500% more awesome skills than I probably ever will and does it barefoot.
My stance has changed from "you need to be making more slag and swarf in the garage" to "Apparently I have sensitive little sissy feet"
I used to wear sneakers until I ran over my own foot while pushing my CJ-7 into the garage. That didn't feel good, but also didn't do any damage.
The worst accident, and fortunately the only other incident I've had, was cleaning the Jeep's valve cover with a wire brush on the floor. I was holding down the cover with my foot, and the brush caught the shoelace, and ripped up the side of the shoe and onto my ankle. That one was very painful, and very bloody.
I have proper steel-toe boots now.

Did you see those hand hammered floor boards he did with all the right ribbing? His builds are by far the most shocking in terms of hand built quality with not much more than a rock and a stick I've ever seen...

Same here - but it was burns that cured me. Never weld in running shoes.
Yessir, nothing like a piece of hot weld slag burning through to the top of the foot to loose a string of expletives, mad hopping in circles and trying to rip off a tight shoe. I did a lot o welding on hot sticky July nights a few years ago so did this wearing shorts, tennis shoes and no shirt. That's when I discovered:
1) MIG arc will give a sunburn
ii) sunburned nipples sting for a couple of days
tres) hot slag makes a sizzle noise when it hits sweat beads on the legs.
I've ruined damn near every pair of shoes I've owned in the last 10 years because I want to go out to the garage... right now. Currently it's a set of Etnies high tops (needed the extra ankle support after I blew it apart playing zombie scenario airsoft). They're still in good shape.... but I'm sure that won't last.
