There's usually an arrow on the gas gauge indicating the side of the filler, that or the side the handle is on in the pictogram.

I don't think I ever saw that until ~2004. European cars seem to have it on the right more often -- I know my BMWs have.
Another thing I learned (Car Talk,) is that the fuel filler is usually on the opposite side of the car from the tailpipe.

not on the samurai see
*note that has been modded to led's.
My Porsche and Jag are on the right side. So is the corolla I think. American cars seem to be on the left.
Edit the corolla is on the left. Filled it today and had to do a lap around the gas island.

note which side the fuel pump's handle is on.. that will tell you where the filler on the car is

Yup, just like I berkeleying said originally.
I have driven VW's and BMW's so long that I am surprised by any side other than the right side. I pull up to the gas pump in the missus Kia incorrectly at least 75% of the time
I miss my old '84 Delta and `71 Cutlass that had the filler behind the license plate. Safe? Probably not.
I know my Volvo 240 Wagon had it on the passenger side, as does my W126.
There's no standard to the labels. The handle on the gas pump icon all depends on if the graphic designer even knew and if there's no corporate standard. Our 2000 Jeep has the arrow. Our BMW does not.
It's all up to packaging decisions on a specific car. The location of the tailpipe isn't a factor, as that's determined by the internal design of the muffler and the exhaust routing.

Ah, those gauges bring back memories! A buddy of mine had a Samurai back in college---- keep in mind in 1988 it was about the least expensive vehicle you could buy new. His was a total stripper--- no A/C, no radio, he didn't even have a backseat! Man, we beat the everloving tar out of that truck. It's amazing we didn't roll it. I do remember a 50mph top speed into a headwind. Not an ideal hwy car, but a great machine for parallel parking.

Sorry to dismiss your theory, but I'm with Keith on this one. My Miata has the filler on the left side, but the picture of the gas pump on the gauge has the handle on the right side.
Trying to remember which side the gas door is on is one of the many curses of the multi-brand automobile owner.
Generally it's on the opposite side from the muffler on single-muffler cars but that's not even close to a constant, and also good luck remembering which side the muffler is on.
In reply to Joe Gearin:
mine has no a/c or radio, the speedo is a best guess(i use a phone with a gps speedo since 55 reads as 42ish on the speedo and under 30 it just bounces wildly). mine will happily do 60(it has a bastard 1.6 8v aka a 1.6 block with a 1.3 head) but 5th gear is useless 60mph at somewhere around 3500-4k in 4th. I really need to drop down to 30's or 29's.
My Bimmer and Nissan 240sx have it on the right and My Acura and Chevy C1500 have it on the left. I always have to brainstorm when I'm pulling in to the station.
I guess if you have a remote gas door, you can pull the gas door release and then drive really fast backwards to make the wind blow it open.
Then just look in your rear view mirror to figure out which side it's on.
I was under the impression that the filler is usually in the driver side. So cars from countries that are right hand drive have fillers on the right.
Caprice filler in the back is great for when people park in front of the pump and don't get gas
My Fox body Mustang has it on the passenger side and that's about as American a car as you are gonna find. Actually it is useful for getting to the last pump in a busy gas station.
Suburban, Ranger, Miata: all on the left. Passat is right. I don't find it particularly arduous to remember which side to pull in on.
The weird annoyance came a few years ago I bought a XJ Cherokee and it took an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to open the filler door.
I pull the release on my cats that have it. It pops out enough to see it. The truck is too old to have a release but the cap sticks out enough to see it anyway.
@stefan: total coincidence in this case on the icon thing. The samurai is too old and too basic for that to be thought out that far.
