Watched the engine masters episode where they played with a gen3 hemi. These things are making about 400/400 stock, vvt, crazy flowing stock heads, and Holley makes a PNP efi controller for about $1,300. LQK's website shows 5.7's for about $250-300. (Yay, no LS tax!)
just need a good manual transmission behind it with proper racecar gearing. Anyone know of a good shifting transmission that will bolt up? Or a bellhousing swap?
Thank you. I have been looking at doing a 5.7 Hemi swap.
It's still just a sbm pattern...
Brief googling found this and other options to put an F body T56 or Magnum behind one. TR6060 is a direct bolt on with stock Challenger parts. Viper T56 probably bolts up if you happen to trip over one of those.
Also, modern Mopar and cheap. HA! You got jokes. I was looking for a replacement motor for a friend of a friend's truck and wasn't finding anything for less than $900. Including LKQ.
Interesting. Everything I pulled up the other day said between 250-300$ depending on condition and mileage.
edit; a quick search just now shows everything $2800+ wtf internet!
SBM bolt pattern gives you the following options for manual trans:
1) A-833 four speed. Compact, unbreakable, no overdrive. Getting thinner on the ground and more expensive as the resto guys snap them up. A good one will probably cost $700 or so. Come in two flavors - A-body with a shorter tailshaft/more forward shifter position and B/E with a longer tailshaft and rearward shifter. Would probably work great for a racecar. No overdrive, if you're looking for a dual-purpose car. I know off-the-shelf parts exist to put them behind a new Hemi, but I don't know how expensive your clutch/flywheel/etc. setup would be.
2) A-833OD four speed overdrive. Compact, tough but not completely unbreakable, not great for a race car because of the ratio spread between 3 -4. Work great on the street, though. Cheap and fairly easy to find. Otherwise see above- literally the same transmission as the 833 with third gear replaced with an OD gear and some finagling with the shifter making it go 1-2-4-3 with a regular H-pattern.
3) Toyota R154/GM MA5 = You need a 3.9 Dakota manual bellhousing and transmission from either a MK3 Supra Turbo (unobtanium) or a Colorado/Canyon/Solstice/Sky. This requires some parts finagling, but the transmissions are fairly common and cheapish and they're pretty tough. Clutch and flywheel might require some custom work. These are kinda bulky but not terrible. This is my long-term plan in my '73 Duster because you get overdrive and decent ratios. You could also hypothetically use the AX-15 from the Dakota you got the bellhousing from, if you've got some stumps you need to pull.
4) TR-6060 from '09- Challenger - this is actually the easy button if you've got the space for the transmission and the budget to do it. Probably cost 2k for the whole setup out of a yard. Big and bulky, but durable and everything bolts together.
5) Passon performance has a five-speed based on the A-833 that should be a drop in anywhere you already had one, but get out your wallet.
What are you planning on putting this in?
NV3500's came behind Magnum 5.2's and should bolt up although the strength might be marginal behind a 5.7 Hemi. It's another truck trans with a deep first gear so it might not be of interest. Not sure if it's any weaker than the AX15 or R154?
