May have found a very cheap Geo Storm in decent shape. What should I look out for? Light, seen good reviews about handling and there would be loads left in the challenge budget if I went that way

I raced a GSi for 3 years at our local track. If it is a GSi, it'll have a nice little DOHC engine that wants to keep up with Honda/Acuras, but cant' quite. Also, you will suffer with parts availability issues. There is no aftermarket support and they are few and far between at junkyards because not very many were made.
I finally got frustrated enough with that issue and just sold the racecar and parts car so I can get something with better support.
A base model (non-GSi) is a SOHC and will likely have better support. But it is not likely to be competitive.
YMMV
