My brother-in-law is turning his 93 Z-28 in on obama's $4500 plan - he's gettin' a prius. So he's giving me what he describes a a high-dollar Venom nitrous kit that he installed on the car a few years ago....I just have to drive down and take it out ( & anything else I might want that will still allow the car to be eligible for the program.)
To use the NAWS on my Challenged IROC-Z I'll need to use the fuel I use for the trip as "shipping" but the parts are free. I figured I'd fill up as I leave & refuel when I get back to get the correct amount for my Challenge budget. Am I doin' that right?
How much NAWS can be applied to a 305 SBC w/o breakin' stuff?
This kit is a computerized system foe fuel injection. I'll need to find parts to adapt it to work with my Q-jet.
This is going to be fun.
I really have a hate for all of these people crushing performance cars.
I am just saying
I'm with you. I don't know what the car is valued at but there is nothing wrong with it. I can't afford to buy it & he's convinced that he can't sell it for anywhere near $4500. perfect waist of a good car.
What the tree huggin' dirt worshipers don't seem to realize is car guys started recycling way before anyone else thought it was cool.

That initiative is not the agenda of the tree hugging dirt worshipers. It's just a typical game of 3 card monte to try to appease everyone but will make everyone angry.
That's my uneducated take on it (as a tree hugging dirt worshiper)
More to the point. At one time, I thought the rules said that to get "free" or unbelievably cheap stuff, it would have to be an offer to the general public. This type of "my brother had it laying around and gave it to me" scenario is excactly the kind of thing that the rules discouraged. But maybe that's changed. I've never put together a challenge car, so I'm not sure.

Man a Z28 to a prius.....what has this world come to?
Always wanted try swapping in 3:08 gears to a 6speed Z28, megasquirting it and adding a sts style turbo setup to see what kind of mileage you could get out of it.

I'd tend to agree with this. As it isn't available to the public for free or cheap... it isn't really legit that route.
A deal is one thing, but completely free that way is just a bit beyond.
Free = has to be available to everyone free and you got there first. iIrc.

Start off with a 50hp jet, then increase jet size by 25hp increments til the engine blows, then go back to the last jet used.
This kinda thing actually helps the challengers because that camaro is going to be stripped of all recyclable parts before its crushed...
so more junkyard LT1's and such for the rest of us.

Yep, if it's free for everyone, it's free. If it's a special free deal, you have to claim FMV.

You should easily be able to run a 150 wet shot.
Does this mean I can get $4500 when I graduate and trade in my 02 Cadavalier for a real car!??

Nope. They are crushing the drivetrains, because those are the evil polluting parts.

If you got it from your brother, you have to claim "fair market value"...and since this is a fancy system, that probably isn't what you'll want to end up using. Your call.

Keep dreaming. I'm opposed to the cash for clunkers bill ENTIRELY, but this part in particular:

What happens to the vehicle I trade in?
The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train.
So, in other words, if you are looking for cheap body panels, control arms, or steering columns, you're in luck. If you're looking for cheap LT1s or 4L60s, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

Only if the gubbymint says the Cadavalier gets less than 18mpg

Yea it really makes no sense to put a 93 model engine into a 64 chevelle.
berkeley.
and yes I would agree that in the spirit of the challenge rules you'd have to give the NOS a fair market value if it was given to you. What if your brother decided to "give" you an LS1?
As for the shredding of drivetrains, that is stupid and hurts my feelings.
on top of getting rid of perfectly good parts that could keep the cars currently on the road running for years and years...
I still think peoples lack of economic knowledge is funny...
assuming you pay cash... which we ALL do right? haha
22,000 - 4,500 = $17,500
how much longer could you drive on 17,500...
i make fun of my bro-in-law... his paid for car was starting to "nickle and dime" him (driving a mid 90's metro)... so he went and bought a 1 year old cobalt to the tune of $300 a month... he could have completely replaced the car with something similar in less then 6 months... let alone fixing what needed done to keep it riding (drivetrain was fine)
ok my rants done... each to their own... i'll keep driving various levels of beaters for years to come and be happy... he can be in his state of bliss driving the car that is going to save him a ton of money
Well some of us actually have jobs that require us to be places at certain times (like court, etc) and "your honor, my piece of E36 M3 93 metro broke down on me again" might work ONCE but after that you are SOL. So for me if I car started to let me down it would have to go, economic sense or not. Cause losing my job for failiing to show up for a hearing because I was trying to drive the wheels off a 15 year old E36 M3box doesn't make economic sense at all. Just keep that in mind...
I have an AAA card but out here it still takes at least an hour for the towtruck to show up.

Or pay your brother something for it. Will making your brother part of the builder team count if he added it to your car? Naw, FMV would come into effect.

that is why I have a Saab and a BMW. The chances of both being broken is pretty slim.... and actually neither has broken since I fixed the trans on the saab
......like new stuff doesn't breakdown.
For god sakes, stop calling it Nawwwssss. Say NITROUS. Its manly.
