I DD'd a 4-door 1966 Impala (3-on-the-tree baby!) for 3 years and never ever ever ever thought twice about it. The classics are as reliable as the sunset, and cheaper than dirt to fix. At one point in time I had 6 adults in the car for a 6-hour road trip and no one complained (in fact, we had room for snack bags between us)
For fuel mileage I got 16mpg highway, a point or two over 20 in the city.
It's worth stating though, that at 17-miles, I decided my commute was getting too expensive for the Impala and have relegated to more "classic car" type duty.

As far as I'm concerned, taking the photo in a way which makes them really easy to see is mentioning it. Without further explanation, I assume the cause to be the obvious, nothing mysterious about it.

T5 swap seems like a nice idea. And a small diameter steering.
I cannot find a flaw in this plan, except maybe that it will handle like an aircraft carrier, but if you can make it accelerate and ride like an aircraft carrier there is nothing to loose.

If that car is like the Torino I drove in college, the seat bolts have pulled out of the rusty floor, so the seat is rocking back and forth like a La-Z-Boy recliner. I suspect if you go look at it in person you'll find it's really rough.
