Sorry, ninja edit:
the $1700 quoted from a body shop(the lowest) was just for a roof blend and a tailgate. MAACO's quote is for the whole truck

But if just the roof and tailgate need attention he could DIY both of those for ~$100. That's what I did with my wife's Corolla and it completely changed the look of the car.

That was base and clear. It was the most expensive option they had for my car. At the time one of my good friends worked at maaco and made sure everything was taken care of properly.

Aahhh, now I get it. This is sounding like a decent option! I wonder if you might still want to do as much prep as possible, but leave the line item on the estimate for prep in the event that they might see the need to contribute somewhere based on their experience, as needed. Sort of like taking your car to the auto mechanic - they're more likely to do a good job if your car and engine bay are visibly cared for than if it is just filthy and unloved.

Oooooohhh, thats makes a lot more sense.
Appleseed: weeeeelll, it doesn't have THAT much paint on the roof...
Mezzanine: I like the way you think man. I think I'm going to bring a couple $20 bills too, just in case
