I've heard of people getting great offers from Carmax for random things, but I have yet to experience this on any of my vehicles. That said, my vehicles have usually been enthusiast vehicles.

I've got a 2014 Focus ST that I was using for autocross and occasional drives. Has around 9k miles on it, fully loaded ST3 package car (full leather recaros, nav, sunroof etc). A friend is offering me a co-drive spot in a BS C5 Corvette he is preparing for national level competition in exchange for me buying the tires. I figure I'm going to spend about the same amount on tires for that car as I would on the Focus, so I'm going to dump the Focus payment and drive my truck instead during the winter and next fall probably look at the C6 Z06 Vette.

I'm thinking they offer me $19k for the car, which I won't accept. If they got up to $21-22k I would think about it. Seems like retail is around $24-25k.

What is the general rule when selling a car between private parties when the seller has a loan outstanding on a car? Does he just have his bank send the check over to my bank?

Got any takeoffs you want to sell?

In my area, used FoST go for about 18k to 21k. Granted these have over 20,000 miles on the clock. A few I've looked at have had more than 1 owner too. Value seems to drop quickly. Might be better to sell yourself.

After you get carmax's offer shop the car to the local ford dealer, and any dealers that you see routinely have sporty vehicles on their lot. Chances are they will offer you more. Don't let them know your took it by carmax 1st.

For what it's worth, KBB says your trade in value is 19-20k in excellent condition. I'd be surprised if they go higher than 20k personally but what do I know.

$15k-17k is my bet, what do we win if we're right?

Stranoparts rear bar and Cobb rear bar. Steeda rear swaybar endlinks. Cobb bar is ready to go. The other stuff will come off after this weekend when I finish our last local points event.

My undying admiration. Damn, that would be a super lowball offer.

pimpm3 wrote: Where you located? Have you considered ebay?

Never considered it. Not even sure how ebay would work out. Never sold a car on there before. Probably do autotrader and see how that works out if I go private party.

They'll go off of what they should be able to get sending it to auction, KBB, NADA, ETC mean nothing to them. The offer will be under "Rough Trade In".

Carmax $17k.

What is the prize for picking the closest number?

my 350z track edition... i bought it from them for 25k, lost my job etc. sold it to them for 12k after spending 9 months trying to sell it in 2009... Their "equivalent" was a base model car at auction... nevermind the track cost 10k or so more than the base when new. To this day I regret keeping the stock track wheels (which are worth over 2k) and putting the snow tires/wheels I had on when I paid them to take it.

yeah I'm guessing $16-17K as well.

Full loaded ST3 2014's I can find with 20K on them for ~$18K:

for example.

$17,300 and they will probably sell it themselves. They will give you less for the car if they think it is not stock because it automatically gets kicked to wholesale with mods.

I say $20,500

Edit: assuming great condition and bone stock.

There are 252 for sale on cars.com below $21k. Not saying they are all low mile or as nice as yours though.

They want to make money on it, so I agree with the 15-17k estimates.

Yeah, I know they don't care about book values so much. My point was that if KBB is X dollars, then a dealer will probably offer well under that in most cases. Especially a place like CarMax where they're going to offer something along the lines of wholesale. In this case KBBs most optimistic value was still under the OPs desired value, so the chances that he gets close to what he wants from any dealer are pretty low.

Have considered listing it here at GRM?

I'm gonna say $18K. Here's a 9k mile ST that's selling near me for almost $23k I think a 5k profit is probably what they will be shooting for.

It'll be like the ms3's were years ago, Carmax wanted $25k for one on the lot with 19k miles....when the Mazda dealer up the road was selling new MS3's for $19k

No prizes for guessing correctly, I wasn't given any budget for this contest.

I'm thinking they will offer $18-19k as in the area I'm seeing Carmax selling them for $23-24k with higher mileage.

Type Q wrote: Have considered listing it here at GRM? Where are located?

I'm in Shelton Connecticut.

I'll probably end up doing private sale to get a few grand more out of the car. Its tempting to take any offer that puts me above my payoff just for convenience, but if some of these predictions bear out that will still be way lower than what I could get even if I sold it at a low retail price.

I also don't need to sell. The interest rate on the thing is so low I'm not really going to care if I have to make more payments on it.

My guess is 17-18k at best. It's been a while since I dealt with carmax, are there offers negotiable or are they take it or leave it?

so the first offer is what it is, second is usually the same, third offer will be substantially less. (if you came back a third time they have you by the jimmies.)

All offers are good for 1 week from date of offer.

Where are you located and what would you actually take for the car? You can PM me if you prefer. Thanks.
