Goodwood is currently hosting Speedweek at the Goodwood circuit, it seems like a combination of the Revival and the Festival of Speed. They are doing the usual racing on the circuit along with a one lap shootout on the track with newer faster stuff instead of the hill climb.

The touring car race with the big Ford Galaxies and that Studebaker Daytona was great (Stig Blomqvist won the race in a Galaxie.)  The shootout was pretty cool, too - the all time lap record was broken several times.

This has been more fun to watch than most of the f1 races this season. Great racing, that fellow in the Porsche cup car was hustling that thing in the track sprints!

Did I correctly see that the Mach-E mustang did a front wheel drive burn out and then a rear wheel drive burnout? Because that's pretty cool if it did.... That's an advantage I never considered for an all-wheel drive electric car.

Hmm, never thought of that either. With a bit of a programming hack you should be able to have the front and rears spinning in opposite directions at the same time, that would blow some minds!

That's what it looked like to me.  The announcers were talking about the sound it makes, which made me wonder how much of that was 'engineered' into the car, and how much was just the natural sound of electric motors.

It's still a pretty homely Mustang, though...I'd like it a lot better if it looked like the rest of the model line.

Lol, that's true, but this one had purpose since they're doing one lap track sprints on a cold track. A normal AWD car couldn't do much of a burnout to get the tires working, I'm assuming that kind of tire warmup could help AWD electric drag cars hook a bit better as well? I'm not sure how long he held it, but he had the fastest 1st sector for a while with the Mach-E (and a relatively middle pack overall time if I'm remembering correctly), so it worked!

The little you could hear of it, it did sound rather jet plane like, I bet it was impressive in person if you could hear that well from the track side cameras.

I'd like to have a look underneath one of those Galaxies to see what makes them handle so well.

I'd look who's in the driver's seat first ;)

Oh, there's no doubt that guy is a helluva driver, but no stock '63 Galaxie will corner that flat or that fast.

I’m sure you wouldn’t be blown over backwards by any technical wizardry.  I’m betting it’s just bars, bushings, spring rates, shock adjustment, and maybe some minor geometry tweaks.  By ‘63 the factory had the basics down solid.  It was just all “consumer grade” and unsorted when they arrived at the dealers.

Edit: and tires

You can improve the handling of most 60s American cars pretty easily with springs, sway bars and shocks. I've read a couple of British magazine articles on small sedans (Austin A35 and a Wolsely) that outlined the detail changes made to race at Goodwood. There was a surprising amount of prep and modification. The Galaxies are the "lightweight" R-code versions, so something like 350-400 pounds lighter than stock to start with. I can't remember if the rules for Goodwood allowed for relocating the suspension pivot points or not. I grew up driving 60s cars as a teen and I routinely banged the rear axles on the bump stops with no one in the car but me. Add five friends on Friday night and the suspensions were useless marshmallows. I revamped the suspension in my '75 Granada (don't judge me) by utilizing heavier front coils, adding a leaf or two the rear, and buying better dampers. I can imagine a race shop doing all that and more to a Galaxie, with premium components would make it a hoot to drive. I've never driven a car on bias ply race tires, so all that sliding would be a new adventure. The video certainly makes it look like fun........and the 500+ horsepower didn't hurt either.

A Doug Nye article on how lap times at Goodwood today compare with the 1960s.....

https://www.goodwood.com/grr/columnists/doug-nye/2018/10/doug-nye-how-much-faster-has-historic-racing-become/

Better tires, more horsepower, better shocks and often, a cage that is stiffer than back in the day, if they even ran a full cage back then.
