Finally drove to North Carolina to pickup my 1985 RX-7 IT car. Nineteen and half hours on the road, and my car was home. I'm totally stoked.

The tow vehicle worked perfectly. 2001 MPV. They are rated between 3000-4400 pounds depending on who you believe, Mazda USA or Mazda UK. As mentioned before, I installed a huge trans cooler and brake controller (with lots of hand holding form the forum, thanks!). I figure I was towing around 3500 pounds. Had absolutely no trouble maintaining 65 mph. Towing mileage was between 12-16 depending on how much I need to turn of the OD. The back end was a little low when fully loaded, but not to bad. I'm going to look into air bags for the rear.

Mike Allison, they guy I bought the car from, was great. He was selling all his race cars after a career of racing. He apparently ran C2 cars in the '86, '87, and '88 LeMans. I have not confirmed that, but I have no reason to doubt him. He was very helpful.

The car is a Arizona car with 93K on the clock. It's been a race car since 1998 according to the logbook. It last raced in October of 2008. Car has an Autopower cage with added door bars and a Kirkey seat. It's mostly stock, but does have a header and low flow exhaust system. It sounds really mean revving ! Pansports with Toyos mounted, which are in great shape.

My first event with it will be the Wiregrass SCCA autocross next month. After that I'm planning to autoX all next year and some HPDE. I've also got $510 left for the 2010 challenge. That should be fun and I'm planning on being there.

With that in mind, I'm open for suggested mods. What would you do for $500 with this? I'm conceding the concourse, this is a race car. Right now I'm thinking suspension, shocks and struts, new bushings, maybe some carb work. Any and all thoughts appreciated.

I have one pic of the car at VIR when Mike drove it on it's last race. I posted that in my garage. I'll get more pics up in the next few days, and one of me driving it next month.

Cheers,

J

Knowing bubkiss about rotaries... I could see a cheap DIY turbo setup for that much money.

Congrats!

I'd just drive the heck out of it, and fix what's busted.

So I was going through the paperwork and found a Dyno report from last year. Looks like it made max 116 hp at the wheels with a max torque of 155. It lists roll speed, not RPM. I guess I can call them and have them enlighten me. I'd love to know what those RPM's are for shift points.

That sounds... backwards... for a rotary. Sure it's not 155hp and 116 tq?

In reply to Jeff:

Those hp and torque numbers look backwards, especially for a rotary.
