Uh, the seller's in NC and I'm in CA, there's 3000 miles between us. Is there no provision for that?

(Edit -- googling around seems to suggest that the seller and buyer don't have to both be in front of the same notary at the same time).

Legally the notary isnt supposed too notarize it without both partys present but alot of notarys will stamp damn near anything for a few bucks.

Yes, the seller can visit a notary on his/her own to have it notarized.

NC is not a friendly state for private car sales, especially if you live here.

Man, this NC title nonsense is crazy.

Can we get a 'diag my trans issue' thread going? MAYBE someone will be able to E-Diagnose a cheap repair. It's worth a shot. Talking about NC is depressing.

Yea, here's the prob.

The s10 had a 700R4 during engine swap. Somehow it ended up with a turbo 400. GRM'er who checked out the vehicle with me said the transmission felt off. I drove it home 2 hours and it seemed like it ran fine to me. Woke up next morning and needed to run an errand, took it out of park and into drive and it wouldn't move when I'd get on the gass. Got out, walked around back and noticed the rear was caked with transmission oil or engine oil. Crawled under and it was the same, covered from the transmission pan back. So still has that problem. I put it into Drive and the car will just barely move when I get on the gas.

So far all I've done was look at the transmission fluid levels. It didn't have a dipstick so I got one and when I checked it had enough.

Based on that description, I would double check the fluid level. It's highly unlikely it dumped a bunch of ATF but is somehow still full. Im especially dubious since it wasn't specified how you came up with a 'correct' dipstick to go off of. Are you checking the fluid with the engine running?

Proper check procedure is engine running, trans hot (subtract a pint for cold?), click through all gears, then back to park, then check.

Ask questions?? Who does that? :)

When I bought the RX-7, it was via eBay from some place in Wisconsin, a friend of mine is the one who actually bid on and bought the car, and we were splitting the car 50/50 - he got the Holley carb, intake, and engine, and I got the shell. When they sent the paperwork, they signed the title over to my friend instead of me.

I doped to the title bureau and tried to transfer it to my name, explaining the mixup, but the very nice lady behind the counter (who was, IIRC, the actual county clerk of courts) kindly told me that I can't do that, that would be jumping title and there are all sorts of fines and stuff involved if I tried that.

Ended up contacting the place we got the car from, who got the signed-over title nullified, got a new one signed over to my name, and even faxed it to the title office. This took about 20 days though, during which time the temp tag ran out. They had no problem giving me a temp tag with the title signed over to the wrong person...

Ever since then I have been extra scrupulous in getting the title signed over to me as soon as possible (not necessarily practical). Yes, there are fees and stuff involved. That is part of the price of buying a car. A $1000 car isn't $1000, a $3000 car isn't $3000, it's $1080 or $3320. (I think. It's been a few years since I bought a car, they've changed the tax rate a few times since then)

It varies so much depending on where you live, there's really not much point in anecdotal DMV experience unless you live in the same state as the OP. In PA, title registration is done by private franchises, similar to inspections. I've been going to the same store for 25 years. While PA may have a bunch of other weird things to deal with car-wise, titling is berking easy.

I agree.

Where did the dipstick come from? How do you know it's the right length?

Every car is different. The 700R4 is used in many cars, and the dipstick length varies depending on application. Plus, you've got a custom application. If the dipstick tube is shorter than the dipstick, it will read higher than it is.

You have dumped a lot of trans fluid recently. Either someone topped it off, or you made a mistake.

Since it's not running anyway, I'd add some fluid and see if it makes a difference. If it does, take it to a shop for a pan gasket, drain and fill. Use an accurate measured amount for the fill, then modify the dipstick.

I think you may be quitting too quickly on this. You are reacting to your frustrations instead of managing the problem.

But if you want out, I'm pretty sure there are GRMers who will be happy to take it off your hands. IF the title is in your name.

Also note. You bought it in SC. Look up notary states and see if they are one. The applicable law is that of the state you buy in, not the one you live in. They can not make you have the signature notarized if SC is not a title notary state.

Also dump in trans fluid until it moves, then find the leak. Low trans will read full when cold or not running. Th400's are resilient beasts.

Ok. Yesterday I was certainly in a mood. Today I'm getting the title and tags figured out then getting this thing running again! Going to re-check the trans fluid since I sort of did it half assed frustrated. Not gonna give up this ghost just yet.

You sure it isn't a bolt on yoke 400? Reason I say that is that the bolt holding the output shaft is drilled all the way through and if not plugged will leak like a sieve.

Interesting to see how the law varies state to state. I have never heard of having a title notarized. I have purchased cars from dealers in Virginia who gave me a title in the previous owners name. The P.O. had signed it, but the dealer did not hold title to the vehicle in his name. AFAIK, a vehicle can change hands an infinite number of times before it is finally titled at DMV, at which time it can optionally be registered for road use.

Good luck with the tranny!

I'm in NC. I once acquired a car with the title section filled out for the person who sold the car to the guy I bought it from. It was a "track car" so I didn't think anything of it, until I tried to sell it. Never again will I buy a car without a good title. As an aside, I am also a notary in NC and refuse to do car titles, unless for close personal friends. (Technically the only part being notarized on a NC title is the seller's signature and info, so you could get by with just the seller going before a notary. Best practice is to have both party's present though).

Well ran into a problem.the TH400 dipstick and sleeve is not in there. Not really sure what to do. I can make one but don't know the proper length, so I was thinking of rigging a long one that goes to the front of the engine bay so I can check it. But that seems pretty Jerry rigged.
