Hasn't slowed the local VW dealer down. They still have the most arrogant add campaign I hear daily on the radio.

This, is a great idea....more leverage if it was diesel and actually a part of the scandal but still...
In reply to Huckleberry:
I have a sneaking suspicion that they will not be willing to negotiate any lower than if they were at the top of that list.
My local dealer has more than one 4 door GTI at 24k out the door. That's a pretty good deal already.

I guess I should have included a few of these -

Seriously. AFTER the Germans were exposed as liars and cheats, you'd think that they would have learned their lesson. But no. The US government said "hey, what about the V6 diesel?" and VW issued an official statement that no V6 diesel models were fitted with cheating software. 18 days later, they issued another official statement saying that they also lied about the V6 models too. (This affects VW, Audi and Porsche)
After being caught in a lie, they decided to officially lie...again. Some people will forget, others have learned an important lesson: never trust a German. Ever.

Well, THAT's a bit of a generalization....

It's probably for the best. I'm really only going there to convince myself the Focus RS isn't practical as a daily driver because the VW will certainly have a nicer interior. I swore off VW long ago - but I will still hoon around in the demo car. Then I'll tell myself that neither of these cars (RS, Golf R) is the equal of a 10yr old E46 M3 no matter what hype they are pushing. So, buying the M3 will feel like a huge bargain and won't have all the stupid electronic touch screen junk I didn't want anyway. Then, I'll tell my wife I'm saving $20k!
And I get a low miles 10yr old M3 with 44k miles, a 2nd set of track wheels with fresh Hoosiers, big brakes and MCS dampers for pretty much even money with the sale of the truck it's replacing.
It's all in the elaborate expectation setting of how you sell it to yourself .

M3 won't equal the AWD, hatch, rear headroom, and stealthy common-man badge.
I tried to negotiate a '16 R for months after dieselgate broke. No dice. Supply has not caught up to demand for that car. The dealers are trying to hold on to some profit as all their other sales drop.
I want to buy a Ford because of the company... but it's like VW designed the R exactly for me...
Oh, just wait for even more positive VW PR as more 2.0 TSI cam chain tensioners fail, causing valves to meet piston, etc., etc. This is an up and coming can of no good for VW/Audi that's just starting to rear its ugly head.
Oh, and the failing PCV monstrosities that blow out rear main seals (that look like they were designed to last 10k miles), the failing intake manifolds (fortunately covered under extended warranty now, but still), and the inevitable intake valve de-carboning service requirements.
I went in to my 2011 GTI purchase with what I thought were 'eyes wide open', but since the TSI was the supposed fix to the multitude of FSI engine failures, expected something better.
Tick, tick, tick .... (just waiting for the inevitable BOOM once I slip past the OEM powertrain warranty on July 17th).
In reply to einy:
Wasn't the tensioner redesigned in 2012? I've heard of some people getting it replaced under warranty before it causes engine failure.
The TSI tensioner (current model ends in '-K') was redesigned in 2012, but I've got a 2011. Also, this does not mean all 2012's have the -K tensioner, although there is an inspection plug on the front lower cover so you can take a peek - if you can get the hard rubber plug out and finagle an inspection mirror and light in to see.
If the tensioner fails while powertrain warranty is in effect, yup - you get a new engine. If it fails outside of powertrain warranty, no dice. I have not heard of anyone getting a new tensioner on VW's nickle prior to failure - there is no current campaign out there for this according to VW. Personally, I have 4 months left on my p/t warranty (which VW will NOT extend, even for $'s), and looking at either a difficult diy to replace mine, or a bill of approx. $1200 to have our local, reputable, independent VW/Audi place do it. Yup - $1200 to replace a tensioner that is known by VW bad design. (Talked to them yesterday - they are doing 1-2 a week at this point.)
I've seen some less than complete diy's posted to change this part, and given the 'bad' that can happen if you mess up even a little, I'm probably going to end up springing for a professional wrench to make this change unless someone posts a comprehensive diy that shows how and when to use the VW 'keep everything lined up and in time' doughnut looking tool during crank drive pulley removal. That one has me stumped ...
Yea ... this is my last VW product (but then again, this is the same thing I said when my '04 Jetta repeatedly broke) ....
Yeah it would have been a logical progression for me to go out and buy a brand new GTI when I was shopping for a new car 2 years ago but I decided not to. Loved my MK3 and MK4 jetta and I have an 84 GTI too, but I just couldn't do it. The cam follower crap and all of the other stuff going on made me gun shy, and I'm extremely greatful that I live a mile from work and I couldn't justify owning a TDI for that reason. Otherwise I would have definitely bought a 2011 or 2015 TDI Wagon.
I ended up deciding that I should be more "disciplined" this time and avoid buying a car I would mod (I didn't even TEST DRIVE GTIs, STIs, BRZs, SIs, Audis, BMWs, Focus STs, etc. to avoid the temptation) and get something sensible with good gas mileage. I ended up with a Mazda6.

Wait, that's even possible?
