So,Whats it take to make a car your iron mistress ?? Is it a classic American muscle car? What about a European classic? Maybe its a Japanese tuner car ?? I read lots of postings on here and other car forums and am amazed at some of the cars people collect and find interesting. So I would like to know whats in your head when you choose a car? If you have them post some pictures too.
A big one of these:
And/or a nice set of these:
How big do you want this thread to be?
Boost.
I've enjoyed most of my cars (Starlet, Cherokee, Hilux) but so far have only loved my Supra.
One needs to be reliable, all-season, and fast enough for enjoyable daily driving and occasional track stuff. For that I have a WRX.
One needs to be able to haul crap and tow a small trailer. For that I bought my wife a 4Runner that she didn't really want.
One needs to be relatively rare, driven infrequently due to lack of reliability, and something that turns heads when it drives by. For that I have the GT6.
And one needs to be the beater/back-up vehicle/cheap project car that is easy to find junkyard parts for, was cheap to buy, is reasonably cool, and old enough to run vintage plates. And have bad paint so I don't have to worry about it.. That's the e30
For me to bond with a car, it seems to take a race or track day where it delivers me to and from the track with no surprises. Predictable performance.
It needs to be interesting. Interesting because of what I can do with it, interesting to drive or interesting to build. But no matter what, if it's not interesting to drive, I ain't interested.
the DD needs to be reliable, have decent power, and decent braking. Handling is not really an issue but no porker. My DD is an 04 Silverado SS. Dead nuts reliable, 380 tq, and awd. The family is starting to out grow it, so im looking for something else.
The track car needs to be scary and a challenge to drive well. in my case, my 79 firebird. The tail end can get side ways at any second. The car can (has) stall on me mid lap. And only I can drive it decent enough to look like I know what I'm doing.
The project car has to be something you tinker with and could care less when it is up and running or on the road. Its just something to play with.
2 doors, coupe or hatch (not a convertible or T-top), small, lightweight for what it is, and on the modern side. I want my cars to fit me like a shoe. I'm not that large in stature, so I feel a bit ridiculous in large vehicles. It doesn't have to be crazy powerful. It has to be as close to perfect as possible from the factory, since I really have no interest in modifying cars. I love the original M-Coupe, FD RX-7s, and MR2s. I can't stop thinking about the Toybaru Twins, since they represent just about everything I could possibly want in a vehicle.
I don't foresee spending time on the track anytime soon; it's just not how I want to spend my time or money. I just want a car that feels very precise and at home on the road.
I need a DD that is remarkably unique and can handle anything you throw at it. It has to be fun and practical, like my 66 Bonneville getting a duramax. I hope for 30 mpg, tow 8000, cushy ride, big comfort, and zillions of stares.
In general I like cars that are so uncool that they are cool. Not that I would own one, but think of an AMC Pacer. Its so uncool, but imagine it with a super-reliable toyota I-6 swap. I had a 73 Impala Station Wagon that was ridiculously uncool, but it was my DD for 3 years.

Striking looks, black leather, a temper like lightning, and the ability to punish me hard if I get out of line.
Uh, wait, I AM still talking about cars.

Mostly, this^^
Sometimes, reliability is enough. Drove my Saab through the craziest rain storm I've ever known this morning. I was on a delivery run, and at one point entered a deceptively deep puddle (more of a pond, really) far too slowly. Water came up to the bonnet, and the engine started to splutter, but I kept my foot in it and pulled through. On my way back, two cars had stalled out in the same spot. That incident was a bonding moment between the car and I.
Unique/different, Incorporates something I made
I cannot quantify what makes me love a car. Some have been from the beginning (my civic Si) and others have been a relationship forged in time spent working together and just doing everything I expected and more (GMC Van). Mostly I like personality in a car even the most mundane of my cars needs to have something that makes them special or they are just an appliance and I will lose interest.
They either do my bidding without complaint or I beat them to death and get another. Sometimes, in the throes of passion, they die anyway. I almost never love them but I do wax nostalgic for the ones that lasted longest or served well.
We are still talking about cars, right?
Straight sixes do something funny in my pants. Boosted straight sixes do something funny in my pants very quickly. Boosted straight sixes where they shouldnt be do something funny in my in my pants very quickly and without warning.
Personality, heart, loyalty. It had a better be fun to spend time in and generally be there when I really need it. I've loved a few cars, and some I've just driven.
Just like women, sometimes a particular physical detail will catch my eye, and I certainly admire the works of art that are out there, but the day-to-day experience is the building block of love beyond mere utility.
very light, decent hp, great handling, and the only one in my mid size texas town.
which has lead me down a nightmare path my brother has dubbed the frankenfiat.
All the Vic needs is boost and a manual transmission swap. Maybe better seats. LOL Brakes would be cool as well as wheels. I think I've found the wheels I want.
My ideal work on the P71 would be a turbocharged Coyote 5.0 swap, 6-speed, 6 piston front and 4 piston rear brakes, 2-3" fender flares, 17x10" wheels, sticky rubber. That's about it.
I thought this thread was going to be something different...
