I purchased the ground control kit for my 86 hatch when I was planning to run some tokicos. I got a set of koni yellows last week, and it dawned on me that when I ordered the ground controls, it asked what shock I had. I emailed them, and was told that I needed the threaded collar for the konis that takes place of the removable koni perch.
I just don't see where another threaded collar is gonna fit, and give the spring/shock room to compress.
any insight would be appreciated.
Typically, the threaded tube sits on the top of the strut housing and/or lower spring perch. The spring then sits on the adjustable collar with the upper portion being captured by the upper spring perch/strut mount.
So in looking at the picture above, remove the threaded tube , collar and spring. Remove the threaded collar, flip it and thread it lightly onto the tube. Place the assembled tube onto the strut, using the supplied o-rings or centering screws to help hold it in place if necessary. Place the spring on the adjustable perch, then install the rest of the strut per normal.
Let me add: Be sure to put some anti-seize on the bolt that holds the locking ring. I didn't think of it, and I have a problem.
thats what I think is confusing the guy at GC. the 3rd gen civic and 1st gen crx had tapered springs, so the kit is a top-mount coilover. it is supposed to have the threaded collar above the spring, and didn't come with o-rings or set-screws to hold the collar to the shock body.
the removable perch on the koni, when installed, looks exactly like the tokico. thats why I'm puzzled as to what the extra $40 is for.

duct tape wrapped around the shock housing works well for filling the gap between that and the threaded sleeve.
edit: nevermind, looks like it doesn't apply in your case.
yeah, you and everyone else think that this car is "normal".

It looks to me like you just need to flip the sleeve over and slide it down into the spring. Then adjust the collar to get the right height. That's the way I see it in the picture.

Typically, yes. On our cars, no. Oldschool has it right...I mean NO, NO! It's all berkeleyed up! You should just give up and sell those to me for $50 more than you paid for them!!!
I joke, I keed. Have you tried just installing them with the Tokico collar? I'm guessing they'll work just fine once the spring/strut are under load. They should look like this when you're done.:
haha, I hear ya. my cost + 50 would still a steal for ya.
I've not pulled the tokico/GC combo yet to try them on the koni. I think it'll work, but I just didn't want to pull them and find out that indeed I need to have another part. my one concern is that the removeable perch on the koni just sits on this small ring thats made onto the shock body. I can see the perch pushing over the shock ring. I'll snap a pic of it. GC hasn't gotten back to me yet with a pic.
in this pic, the small ring goes down over the clip/ring on the shock, to keep that clip/ring from rolling out, and the spring perch sits on top of that. when it is put together, it looks the same as the tokico. I see no reason why this won't work with what I have. anyone see it any differently?
Looks good to me. Have you thrown that pic up on RPR?
not yet. I think I'll be good. :crosses-fingers:
