So, I just spent the past ~2 weeks painting this stupid air cleaner.

I put it on the carb and it fits like a five year old bathing suit.

Sooo... now I need to try and find a half decent air filter.  The carb has a lip with an ID of 2.3" and an OD of 2.85"  OD of the air filter would probably need to be under 10"

Anyone have any suggestions on where to find a better fitting one?

You didn't mention but is it for that Mustang in the picture?  What engine and what carburetor, is it a two barrel Motorcraft?

Not sure of the measurements, but the chrome lid from a 1966 Mustang Sprint 200 isn't horrible, and would be period correct-ish.

There used to be a small aftermarket  aluminum Cobra housing that used an ovalized round filter, but these cars really do best with a fully enclosed filter, or you and your passengers will smell like gas.

If you're not worried about it being a correct restoration, I'd just go take a look at one of the aftermarket catalogs like Summit, Jegs, or Speedway, and find a chrome universal air cleaner.  They usually include all the dimensions in the catalogs, and they're usually pretty inexpensive.

The filter catalog at the auto parts store may have a dimensional listing in the back.  Very useful.

I started looking at them last night.  I'm going to have to do more digging.  The Summit page doesn't go into enough detail for me to make a good decision, and unfortunately they're the best of the group.
Seems like most of the Mr Gasket stuff has plastic adapter plates, which is annoying.  K&N stuff doesn't list anything but application details.

Looks like a plate of 1/4"x12"x12" aluminum is about $25-30 on Amazon.  Could just turn a bottom lid, or could get a smaller piece and turn a better adapter than the plastic adapter plate.  The latter feels like I would be annoyed the full time I was working on it after I spend $30+ on an existing air cleaner.

Still looking.
