...for the worse
I went to Harry's in Hazelton yesterday with a friend. I got a partial wiring harness and TCU. And had to pay ~$45...
My friend did more pulling, got three struts, a steering rack and a driveshaft. On the way to the counter he asked if I thought$150 would cover it. I told him it should... I was wrong
Not only did she charge him $8 ea for the visibly bad tie rod ends she charged him the driveshaft rate time three????
When questioned, she explained that since Subaru driveshafts are two pieces with the center carrier bearing and extra yoke in the middle, thats how they do it His bill was over $185...
The guy in front of us had a whole hub assbmly complete with a obviously torn up axle that he couldn't get out of the hub, he had t buy the axle
I'll be spending more time and money at the other yards from now on...

That sucks. I haven't shopped their for a couple years now anyway simply because I hate driving farther for a poorer selection, but those prices are insane. My local 'regular' yard treats me better than that.
Always hate to hear "greed" stories like that. Our local do-it-yourselfer is still fairly reasonable but they have started added various fees like a "recycling fee". For the life of me I don't know what it is since you are already at a recycling yard.
glad I have Gary's, sorry for your inconvienience
If you manage to wait until a few minutes before closing time, a giant line forms. Days like fri or sat are even better because you know they can't wait to go wherever after work, so they start not charging for stuff, or not correct items.
I got a complete wiring harness + tranny computer for a camry for $45 as well. If you look at their price sheets sometimes its the same price to get all the parts of the assembly, sometimes (in the case of a FI intake manifold) its cheaper to strip the parts you don't want. If you grabbed every wire in that car and the ecm, I'm sure she would have charged you the same.
Some times when I get hammered by the cashier at the junkyards I console my wallet by reminding myself either: its priceless, this is super rare, or; used OEM at half the price of new aftermarket is still win win.
My father has a hard time with the cashier at Harry's, he doesn't hear well and she gets an attitude if she has to repeat herself.

Dayton, this was at closing time, there was a line and she was still charging everybody for everything. I'd bet the price of a driveshaft that it was the same friendly young lady that your father enjoys dealing with
There are a few other yards around that charge reasonable pricing. If she charged me $68 for a driveshaft that I had to pull, I would have left the driveshaft there for her. But he drove a few hours and really did need it...
We only have one "you pull it" yard within 70+ miles that I know of.
I guess everyone has their days. I have got very lucky at closing times, and have been hosed (charged for bulbs, fuses in the panel I'm buying, miscellaneous hardware) when checking out early in the morning.
Its the same friendly lady every time I've been there. They have that sign that they will charge you for it if you bring it to the register. I wouldn't be surprised if that is in response to a mass of people leaving stuff at the register after getting a total.
$68 is ROUGH for a used CV.

I have left a huge pile of greasy, heavy E36 M3 laying on the counter before... it is what it is... either you successfully argue your case or you walk. Console yourself that someone had to schlep that 100lb pile of control arms out of there to serve the next guy and have a cold one at the nearest pub. Well, leave Hazelton first... then have a beer.

I'll say.
RockAuto sells newly rebuilt ones for about that.

It was a driveshaft, not an axle... It was the other guy in line that had to pay for a beat up axle with bad CV's.

Yeah, I'm in the crowd that doesn't even have a yard that will let you out in it, let alone pullo your own parts. But that sounds like extortion to me.
Hmm, sad. Maybe this person just takes her job too seriously. We had a guy like that here in the Ville for a while, but he don't work there no more.
Your right.
I just thought you caught her on a bad day. I used to go there for fun.
Today, could not find what we needed, so picked up a spare hub-cap and four spare bearing hubs (those tiny tin caps over the wheel bearing).
She said $21.50. I only heard the "1.50" part, which sounded about right.
Nope, $21.50.
you realize I only have ONE hub cap here right?
"yes, $21.50"
.....ummmm, ..... no thanks???
This was after the complimentary 10% Thanksgiving sale. To top it off, Harbor Freight was out of stock of their metal band saw that is supposed to be on sale. I realize it would make a terrible hammer but it looks pretty.
you didn't ask before pulling?
I always get prices up front 1st and ask them what E36 M3 box looked best when it came in.
Thankfully I have www.Toytownauto.com down the street i rarely go anywhere else now.
