We had the drier freeze up on the big compressor once so we finished the last quarter panel with a 2 gallon compressor. Not ideal, but it worked well enough.
When I did the miata I was using a borrowed 25 gallon compressor of unknown output. Attached the dryer directly to the gun and went to town on it. It kept up for the most part.
6cfm @ what pressure? Most cheap compressors are not rated for continuous duty. A piston compressor needs to cycle to cool off. Only an industrial type screw compressor can run continuous. Tank size has little bearing on capacity.
I think you are going to need at least a 2 cylinder 220v high speed compressor to keep up with a paint gun.
What are you planning for a water separator?
If your goal is to "just get paint on the car" it'll be fine.
If you paint in stages, it'll probably be fine.
If your goal is to get a professional quality job, it probably won't keep up.
I've painted a number of beaters with a Craftsman about that size (one of those 110v horizontal ones on wheels). You don't get uninterrupted painting but if you're smart, and the vehicle isn't big, it can be done. Of course everything I painted was flat or satin, so I have no idea how nice glossy base/clear would work out.
