I wanna say the second gen nissan leaf.

They went on for a while saying they were gonna introduce something new and exciting. Then when the day came it was just a new leaf.  You could fell the letdown over the video.

And looking back it informed an awful lot of modern car styling for a long time. In the 80s it was so shocking, and now it looks so normal.

Definitely the Aztek. I remember reading Bob Lutz talking about how that thing got rammed through to production. That was the era where GM was getting shelled for being "boring", so anything that resembled a risk got fast-tracked for production. They took the Aztek concept and unveiled it and reception was severely negative and the marketing guys were going "This is a terrible idea" but it was viewed as "Well, a negative reaction is better than no reaction at all" and got greenlit.

I attended the national convention of the Pontiac-Oakland club in 2001, and the head of design for Pontiac at the time was there as a guest speaker.  When questioned about the Aztek, they didn't really have a good response...they more or less passed the buck and said it was someone else's fault.  smiley

Once you got past the looks they were actually pretty good little cars, and in retrospect the design was ahead of its time - if it were introduced today, it wouldn't raise many eyebrows.

Remarkable how weird becomes normal, isn't it?  They were pretty outlandish parked beside a 6000LE...

I remember my family getting stuck with one as a rental for a family trip to Pennsylvania and it was not a terrible vehicle. Comfortable, plenty of room, reasonable mileage. Biggest downside was the screwy rear visibility from the divided rear window.. Honestly, it would have been better if Pontiac had continued the wackiness into the interior. If you're going to be that strange with styling, you need to really commit and make the interior just as strange as the exterior.

When I saw the ND reveal, I said out loud. "No. What? WHAT!? NO!!!" But I was streaming it from home.

It's grown on me a bit but I still think it's just an OK-looking car. Here's how close they came to greatness:

Yet, my ex- who doesn't care for any previous Miata version and has a disdain for Japanese cars in general, fell in love with the ND at first sight and ordered a Launch Edition model based solely on pictures and seeing the car at the New York auto show.

I'd agree the TR7 apparently received a rather cold reception as it was such a departure from the TR-6 it replaced.   shame since once the quality issues are sorted out it's a pretty good car.

They actually sold a ton of Pacers when they debute.

The readily available mind altering substances of that time may have had just a bit to do with this?
