If you have been following along in the build forum I recently resurrected a 2003 corvette. I bought it crashed from copart and after a month long thrash got it ready for an HPDE this weekend. Car did great but after the third session it developed a gear whine.

It only happens when the car is moving. It goes away when the clutch is depressed or if you lift off the throttle (no load). It makes the same noise regardless of which gear it is in.

Changed fluid in the transmission and the differential. Didn't help. Both fluids were dirty but no metal that I could tell and both magnetic drain plugs were free of debris.

Here is a video I found on YouTube of the same sound.

What does the hive think?

I am leaning towards the bearings in the torque tube or possibly a pilot bearing.

I'm really just buttering you up in hopes you'll take me for a ride in it one day.

A bad pilot bearing will only make noise when the clutch is disengaged. I'm not sure how load would effect the torque tube bearings making noise but I'm not familiar with how that's set up. The video sounds a lot like gear whine from a trans or diff with bad bearings which you probably would have seen on the magnets and if it's in the trans it would shut up in 4th (1:1) since none of the gears are loaded. I suppose if I had to guess I'd say it needs the diff overhauled.

Broken motor mount which is causing a shield to rub? Because if it's the same kind of noise, the actual noise doesn't change with speed.

Watching the video, the pitch goes up as the vehicle (not engine) speed increases. Note how it gets higher as you go through the gears.

I'd look at the rear axles and differential.

I talked to several car buddies today. General consensus is the differential. I am going to order a rebuild kit and look at pulling it out.

Thanks for all the input.
