I need a car for my son. It will be owned by me, driven by him. Needs to be under $3000 all in. I am headed to Florida soon and would like to pick up something clean from the south, somewhere along the route from Akron, Ohio to Rotonda, Florida. Anything I buy needs to be able to make the trip back to Ohio on its own power - No projects. I'd appreciate any leads. We'll be heading down I-77 to 95 to 10 to 75.
Looking mostly at cars like CRX, Civics, E30's, Miata's, Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, and similar type vehicles, but will consider anything that makes sense. He now shares a nice 88 CRX-si with his brother, so the car I buy has to be somewhat equal in condition and coolness.

Yes, because the CRX, E30 and Firebird are oh so similar to each other...
What a cool dad to get a car like that for his son. The first car my parents gave me was an '88 Chevy Nova. It wasn't cool...but I drove it like it was.

Well yeah, good point there. Those cars are obviously not very similar, other than they all have the potential to be cool. Keep in mind that it will ultimately be my car, so this is a way of buying another car without it looking like I'm buying another car for me. So I want to get something that I have interest in, which is commonality that all of those cars have.
Classic 900 convertible? http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/4250642806.html
On this note, there needs to be a Craigslist-along-route search
Dude, wrong thread. That belongs in the crappy CL photos thread.

That's kind of what I was thinking.
Automatic, stick, does it matter?
I'm going to get a lot of rolleyes from the troops, but I've never had issues with Jettas.

How about an E46? http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/4227407203.html
Sorry I forgot to mention that a manual trans is the strong preference. Older, simpler cars are also preferred.

Can't leave out an Rx-7 either:

Dat 318 Fun, cheaper to maintain than the E46 and a decent lady-puller, very important for a teenage boy's first car. Don't let him fall flat on his face out of the gate like I did with a Daewoo.
damnit, if I'd known the Accent was perfect for you!
Loving that 9-5 Aero. 5m FTW.
I have a 92 Volvo 240 sedan with 150k on the clock. Slushbox though. If you are interested I can bore you with the details of everything that I have done to the car. Planned to ask $2,250 on the list of Craigs. Of course there will be a GRM discount!
Also if you see anything else of interest in Knoxville, TN I might be able to take a look if they aren't too far away.
I'd be looking for a full sized rwd car, buick roadmaster, ford crown victoria etc. At least he'll be in a nice safe car. There should be PLENTY of those down there and most all of them will be in good shape.

His volvo 240 sedan is the cleanest thing like ever. I haven't seen a 240 that looked that nice in Ohio since they made them, and even then they weren't that nice.
Okay, maybe I'm over stating it but it's very rust free.
Okay, I should clarify a little more. What we are looking for would have two doors. It would most likely be rear wheel drive, with few exceptions. It has to have a cool factor, and by that I mean it has to be viewed as cool by my son. He's 19 years old and a regional autocross champion. I'm not concerned about his driving ability or maturity, so no need to buy him a bumper car. I'd rather buy him something that has a better chance of avoiding an accident instead of surviving it, because he has the skills - I made sure of that before I let him get a license. Said car should also appeal to me in as far as being desirable or maybe even a future collectible. I understand that this is a tall order within the price range I've specified, but also keep in mind that this is what I want to pay, not what they need to be asking for the car. I would also go over that budget amount if it was the right car. For instance, one car we are going to look at is a '78 Trans Am that is listed for $5500. It may be a good deal or a bad one, but once we're in Florida were going to find out. And what I'm looking for from you guys are leads on cars, not just suggestions on what to buy, although those are appreciated also. Hope this helps. Keep the leads coming, guys, as I need to make something happen on this trip.
Does a 2002 do anything for you?
Gives me a chubby.

Have you considered the 2014 Kia Rondo?
I thought you were moving to Canada.
In reply to 914Driver:
Sure, but when did Boston move to between Ohio and Florida. Nobody told me.
