there was a insanely cheap volvo 142 manual in gainesville for roughly $2000 with oversized tires, a limited slip, suspension mods, single piece buckets, rally wheel. It was a cage, size kit and gravel rubber away from being stage ready, and it just looked awesome.

Ed bought the volvo. I told him my only request is that he enter it in the challenge.
Well, like Jeremy says, I bought the Volvo and drove it home this evening. It looks like this:
Not sure what's next. It's got a few minor things wrong with it - passenger side electric mirror only goes up/down but not in or out. Couple busted rear light bulbs. Dodgy front indicator cover held on with packing tape. And the dash vinyl is lifting from the plastic backing. But all minor stuff that's not really worthy of a build thread. It drives nicely, and should perform admirably as a beater for a little while!
I wonder how easy it would be to graft the drivetrain into one of those Goblin kit car frames...
Pretty sweet Volvo, good find.
Now start selling parts out of it until you get to the Challenge budget.

He bought it for less then the challenge budget, and it even has a new set of eagle F1 tires so he is good to go.
