I'm looking for a spare wheel/tire that has the following specs:

  • 17" (bigger OK, but not needed)
  • 5x4.5 bolt circle, 70.3 mm minimum hub bore
  • Aluminum preferred but not required

The obvious choice is a late-model Mustang GT or SN95 Cobra, but those always go to Mustang specialist yards, who then sell the spares for more than I want to spend.

What might I find in a local junkyard? I know the RX8 and G35 share that bolt circle, but I don't know about the hub bore. Subaru? Do Crown Vics have a 17" spare?

I have a 17x5 aluminum mustang one that I bought for experimental purposes that I don’t need anymore

Dodge Charger/Magnum/Chrysler 300

It's 115mm, but that is a 0.0275591" difference which won't be noticed.

In reply to Will :

My 2006 P71 has a full-size spare, but I don’t know whether it left the factory like that.

I have a couple of spare Acura TL wheels off a 2005.  They are the right bolt pattern dont know about center bore.

Patrick: I sent you a message through the site.

Cooter, Pete: Thanks.

Cdowd: I looked it up and the info I found suggested the hub bore is 64mm. Thanks, though.

5x4.5 is also the pattern for Explorers and Rangers, theres probably quite a few in junkyards although 17s will be harder to find

Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX is another option.

Also Jeep Grand Cherokees from 93 to 97, maybe up to 2001. Jeep TJs and XJs too. Never measured the hub bore but they are large, being 4wd. I know some of the ranger wheels dont fit grand Cherokees because the hub bore is too small..

The RX8 parts might be hard to find because the RX7 guys use them as drag race front wheels. It's a nice, light wheel if you can hunt one down. Center bore is probably the fairly typical 67.1.

Our 2000 Grand Cherokee has a full size spare IIRC.

Is the 17" wheel size essential, or is it simply the overall diameter of the tire (to match the other four wheels) the thing you need?

The 17" requirement is to clear a 13" rotor.

Lots of good ideas so far. Thanks to everyone.

Mustang Cobra OEM 17x8s.  Not a lot of demand and cheapish.
