Looking at either an s2000, or a yota mr-s. Sk2 is 10k easily. The spider I can pick up about 7k all day long.
My usage- fun weekend car with occasional autocross. Wife loves the vert apart of both. S2k has always been on my bucket list. But so has owning a MR car.
S2k is quicker. Pretty much would be happy with its stock power level. Maybe bolt ons.
How sloth is the w30?? Also, how bad is that 1zz? Learn me.

Am confused about post tittle? None of these would be considered "High Strung" in any way. They both have the soul of a shopping cart wrapped in a less wobbly wheeled and sexier chassis.
Here is something a bit more high strung
I am sure someone will be along shortly with some actually useful information!
The W30 will be slower, but it's not glacial. The lightweight aspect of it makes up for it.
The 1zz isn't a bad motor, just likes to eat cats.
If you have the need for speed, the 2zz/6spd is an easy swap, and yields a VERY quick car. Like... dust the hell out of that S2000 quick.
Anything that revs over 6k is high strung.
MRS is approximately the same performance as an NB miata in all categories. It's roomier of the 2 choices. You have the 2 known issues with the MRS, Oiling for track days and possible pre-cat failures. The other thing is the aftermarket is pretty small for the MRS. It's still out there but it's not all over like the Honda.
Find a swapped Spyder and call it a day. I loved mine and want another. I think a 10k s2000 is going to have a rough past.
Wouldn't be a high strung conversation without a mention of RX7/8.
Cons are fuel mileage, oil usage, and need to keep up with the ignition system.
Nothing wrong at all with a 9400rpm red line.
My experience has been that the oiling issues are blown way out of proportion by people who track their cars low on oil. Ive never had an issue running 225 section ra1s on boost with a pretty well developed suspension package. If you're really worried about it then get the moroso pan.
As far as the 1zz goes, it's a great little motor once you throw some boost at it And that solves the precat issue. Zzw30s are fantastic cars, they involve you in the drive and are as pure as anything this side of an elise.
More good news! I have a sorted turbo setup for sale Sorted, like tuned management, proven reliable for 50k, good economy and 214/168@wheels 7psi. Throw it on in an afternoon and have a weapon of a little car no tuning, no bulle36m3 just a done deal.
I would also throw a supercharged or turbo Miata into the mix. A supercharged Miata is one of the most fun cars I've ever driven.
FI Miata is a maybe. The rx8 is not. I kinda got burned on my last rx7. Literally. It caught fire. The fire dudes came out. Nomo roto fo me. The s2k is just so tempting because of the power output from the get go and that exhaust sound... Then again, 7k spyder and 3k thrown at it. Would that put a smile on my face? Lol
Already swapped 2ZZ MRS can be picked up all day on Spyderchat.

put one of those 2.0l Focus ST engines in that RX8 then, lol.
I haven't driven an MR-S. I have spent a fair amount of time in the S2000 and found it to be a lot of fun in auto-x, but it was pretty underwhelming on the street/backroads. I thought it was really, really similar to our RX-8 last time I drove one, but less useful. (And look at the specs - they're basically the same power, same redline, same weight, same front suspension design, etc...) If I were in your shoes, I'd get an MR-S just to change things up a little, since you already had an RX-8.

6500rpm (at least!)
How about this 8.5krpm screaming track weapon?
7200 rpm. That makes my ZX2SR high strung.
Yeah, I'd say 8k+ is a high strung motor. High strung S2000 is an AP1. AP2 not so much.
If I was going to keep it stock, I'd get the S2000. If I wanted to mess with it I'd get the MR-S. Both of these cars are on my current radar and that's my internal debate.
Delightful debate. The mini truck isn't a vert, but I could put a comfy bench back there for swmbo
Miata with a Honda K motor swap. Best handling chassis with rev happiest motor around. Win!

How so?
W30
2200 lbs / 180 hp = 12.2 lbs/hp
S2000
2850 lbs / 240 hp = 11.9 lbs/hp
You put an S2000 and an otherwsie stock swapped W30 together on the same track and I bet the MR2 will get spanked everytime.

Maybe gearing or launch? They seem to get in the 13s pretty easily.
I'll amend my statement for the purpose of the thread, though. A 2zz/6spd MR-S will be as fast as an S2000 for less money.

Header, exhaust, intake needed for the swap, makes the numbers more even. Most go with aftermarket ECU. Than its a wash.

Incorrect, just like how the thread title should state "Roadsters" instead of sports cars....
Jesus Christ guys... This forum is starting to sound like rx7club!
Also, define "sports car"
The lack of any real storage space keeps being a bit of a downer for me on the MR-S. The styling is something I like in a weird way, however the S2000 styling is one of my favorites. MR-S needing a 2zz for real fun is also a bit of a downside. Although I do love a good sleeper. MR-S won't get stolen like the S2000. The RX-8 is cheaper than both of them! Augh!!
That is my dilemma.
Personally, I feel like the S2000's have aged better than the MR-s aesthetically.

Buick 3800s are high strung then. Suckers will rev to 4500 just putting around in traffic.
