so this one is for my daughter and I. I got it for free, with the promise that its going to a good home.
my daughter is currently 5. will be six in January. she has asked to start going to the races with me, and wants to run the karts like she sees the other kids doing. she already drives the big wheels stuff pretty good, so she has some basic fundamentals. next is getting her going in the fields and parking lots, and working her way up to the autocross stuff.
anyway, here are pictures of what I scored.

first is to identify it. next is to get the spare horizontal shaft engine mounted up, as well as figure out hubs, brakes, and wheels. after that, figure out seating, and blow it apart for paint/resto.
then see how it does.
the front spindles are 3/4, the rear is a live axle with a 1 inch axle with keyway, that steps down to 3/4 for the threaded ends. what do I need to pick up?
please keep in mind that this is a beer budget redo. used and cheap are my best options here. not trying to make it truly competitive or anything, just go out and have some fun with my kid.

As I've said before with other kart threads, vintage kart parts are fiendishly expensive. If you find out exactly what it is, and if its rare, you might be better of selling it and buying a "yard" kart. Yard karts are more us. Think turf tires and Briggs & Straton. If you do decide to stay with it, I would us adapters and mods that aren't permanent. An unmolested vintage kart is wroth more. Either way, I hope she has fun.
You got lucky.
It's a Margay.
The company that made it is in St. Louis, Missouri, and is very GRM-friendly.
Parts might be off the shelf, but I'd take a wirewheel to the frame to make sure there's still enough good metal left to be worth saving.
You're looking at $750 in bearings and brakes to make the thing work well again.
As for engines, call Stoney Creek Motorsports in Belleville, Michigan.
Go to a bearing house to get bearings much cheaper.
It has got to be cheaper to buy a used, running setup than to fix up that one.
I had an older White chassis with a CR125, specialized little kart parts add up quick.
Shoot, with the exception of the brake drums most of it looks easy to find. There's got to be a website somewhere for used kart parts. I'd stick a 5HP Breaks & Struggles or one of those HF cheapies on there for training purposes.
Good luck, you'll need it. There is a lot of work to be done on that kart frame that will stretch your beer budget, assuming you can find parts.
I built my kart for $700, after starting with a rolling chassis. I bought my son's complete, with spares, for $600. Both are modern, which is nice because the parts interchange, even though they are from different manufacturers.
Well, I think im going to shelf this frame for a while. It's going to require a lot more money than I'm willing to spend at this point. Im going to find a yard cart frame andsstart her there. If she gets into it, we will revisit this frame.
Or im going to dump it for profit.
I applaud this decision. Used yard karts seem plentiful in my search for "karts" on CL. You can probably find a ready to run circle track kart for not much money either. As long as it's a straight rail (as opposed to LTO, which noticeably bulges out under the seat), it's a matter of simple adjustments to make it go left and right. Both of my karts were former oval track racers.
yup. i think i found a 50 dollar 60's vintage yard kart with no motor. going to go look at it tonight. ill throw my spare engine on there and see if she likes karts as much as she likes the idea of them.
still have to find a remote kill switch, though. shes five.....
