I am trying to determine if this engine is a 327 or a 283. The block casting up front says T0625C. The rear casting says 3789817. Both heads have 3814480 stamped on them. It is currently in a 1962 impala. The valve covers say 327 but obviously that is easy to change.
I am looking to put this in my 1967 chevelle since it was originally a 327 car but has a 350 in it now.
327...just search on google theres a ton of info to be had...thats how i decoded my grandmothers vette motor. btw i found the basic info here http://www.v8s-series.freeservers.com/sbc.htm with a 2 min search but more in depth info is to be had.
I found conflicting information when I searched, thats why I posted it here.
Well the heads are for both 283 and 327, the block casting says its a 327
The real question is it a small or large journal crank?
It had better be a small journal... without having an encyclopedic knowledge of SBC casting numbers, anything made before '68 is going to be small-journal.
Not even sure if any large journal 283s were ever made. I thought Chevy replaced it with the 307 (283 bore with a 327 crank, kind of the anti-302) when they went to large journal.
If you are really stuck I can pull out my SBC books and see what it says.

road draft tube stuff= small journals
no road draft tube stuff= medium journals
3 (sometimes only 2) freeze plugs on the side with the block casting bulging out slightly around the cylinders= 400 block with large journals
