So I really fubared the wiring harness on the 2006 MX-5 i’ve been putting together (it came with the motor on a pallet).

Apparently I hooked up the battery prematurely and without all the correct connections and toasted a wire in the harness.   Mechanic friend of mine came over today and confirmed it’s bad.

I’m throwing in the towel and am gonna pay him to make the car right.  I need to source parts however (still being frugal).  So here’s where the hive comes in.  I need a engine wiring harness, engine bay fuse box, engine bay “body harness” (which should end just inside the fire wall).  Anyone have the hook up?  Any google-fu experts want to find me the deal?

This has me really bummed because it was entirely preventable and utterly my own fault.

I empathize. I have done something similar on more than one occasion. Nothing irritates me more than a preventable complication to a project. It will work out. Don't be too hard on yourself.

On another note, try car-part.com if there are any NCs around you may be able to talk them into the selling you the parts you need.

Fusible link? Often hidden in a harness but blow on exactly these types of occasions...

This is not what you wanna hear....

Learn how to diagnose the wiring.  You are gonna throw a lot of money at this when you can get a cheap or free dmm and ring each wire out to find the bad one.

Wil it be frustrating....  sure!  But you will learn something, save money, and have pride in the car!

100% agree,  Automotive wiring isnt hard on a car of that vintage.  What makes you think you burned up a harness?  Battery connected (properly) and something unplugged shouldnt roach anything.

In reply to 93gsxturbo :  didn’t connect the alternator.  When I connected the battery copious amounts of smoke came from the fuse box.  One wire got smoked and burned off all it’s insulation.

One of our affiliated advertisors has the hookup.  Complete harness from end to end for the car is $175.  berkeleying done and done!!!  As my mechanic said, I could never trust this harness again even repaired.  And absolutely screw trying to do it myself, car electrical runs on pure magic and I refuse to deal with it any more.  I'd be just as happy with brass acetylene lamps for headlights and a crank starter.

How about an AC compressor for the same car?  Is there an alternate one that works well for cheap?  OEM is $600+, remanufactured is near $300 and quality seems iffy at best.  It's a 2.0 Duratec motor, you'd think something from the Ford catalog would fit.....
