I’m ok with that on my low beams if I don’t have to replace them every couple of weeks like I was having to do with other bulb types. Outbacks are notorious for eating headlights and to replace them you have to go in through the wheel well after partially removing the fender liner. The bulb itself is ok if a bit difficult to do blind, but the plastic protective cap is friggin awful to get lined back up.

And make this hooked to car power!

I have these on my truck for off highway and late night driving. I am REALLY happy with them. They are ARB Intensity knock off's from Amazon, ~$75 each.
I also have HID retrofits in my 4runner from TRS, they are very nice for every day driving. My issue with drop in LED bulb replacements is they dont produce enough heat to melt snow off the lenses!

After some googling I ordered a pair of Phillips 9011/HIR1 bulbs on amazon. They should be here between the holidays hopefully, and if they aren’t enough I’ll order the Hellas.

Good, came here to say this. Also, buy replacement 9012s for your 9006 low beams (which I'm assuming your Subaru will have. If they are H9s, swap em for H11s). The bulbs you ordered aren't actually HIR, they're just an updated halogen bulb and they work great.
It's a BIG improvement. You're on the right path. If that doesn't do it for you, you'll need HID or 100W driving lights with pencil beams. Knowing Alaska, you'll probably want both.
Here's the guy to call if you ever have questions like this again: www.rallylights.com He will talk your ear off about lighting options all day, and you have the bonus of supporting a small business vs amazon (same prices). I bet he'll tell you to ignore LED light bars, they're more of a flood while you are going to want a pencil beam.
I've been up your way but never during the winter, so I can imagine it is DARK. I'm assuming you are running dedicated winter tires, right? That would be another huge checkmark for braking ability.
Cheers! I didn't need my driving lights when I was there...

Denali Highway I presume? I usually turn my headlighs off around mid to late April and back on in mid to late September. The rest of the year they're on all the time.
My low beams are H7's otherwise I would have ordered the 9012's too.

H7 is a good bulb.
Yep denali highway. Looks like big driving lights might be in your future :)

Well this might be why my brights weren't so bright:

It won't be a fair comparison between good 9005's and new 9011's, but unless the new bulbs are crap out of the box I can't see me not seeing an improvement. Maybe it'll even be enough to forgo separate driving lights.
The modification to the bulb base was extremely easy with a toenail clipper as has been mentioned elsewhere on the internets and took all of a minute, maybe. The little indent for where to cut wasn't on the base of these like it's been for others, and these were standard Phillips 9011's, but putting new side by side with the originals it was pretty plain to see where to cut.
Pro-Tip: check the shipping dates on Amazon when you order, as it took 2 weeks for the seller to bother putting these in a box and shipping them to me.

Survey Says: I'm happy. The 9011's are incredible. I've got way more light on the sides of the road now, and easily double the distance of the bulbs that were in there. Going off of my odometer, I'm getting noticeable light out to about a 1/2 mile vs the bulbs that they replaced only barely reaching about 200-300 yards. How much of it is being new and how much is being different, I'll probably never test to find out for sure but the reach and brightness of these high beams is incredible. The pair of 9011's cost me $32 shipped on Amazon.
