This, except replace sand with small trees
Dr.Linda thinks I need one of these, after the Elise got totaled with me in it. She thinks I won't get hurt in a H1. Five large... What are you guys doing to me? STOP IT!! I CAN'T HEAR YOU....
I rode in one around some desert trails outside Vegas once. I wouldn't call it fast, but it was pretty quick around the rough & twisty trails, especially with 6-people onboard.

She's right. If it's too miserable to drive you can't get in an accident.
some of the civvi ones had 350 gas engines. I like the idea of the 2 seat pickup truck looking type as a ranch utility wagon. Rallycross would be interesting, just hold it to the floor and steer! By the end of the course you might be going fast enough to think about braking.
Might be just me, but if I'm going ex-military, not road legal, loud, inefficient, hard to work on and totally impractical, I'm also going large: https://kalamazoo.craigslist.org/cto/5524738517.html

Ive been lusting over a duece and a half for ages. Now it wont fit down atv trails but as i said earlier whats the need when you can just make them wider? Deuce and a half wide.

Why stop there?
I think the Airborne guys had the right idea...

Having logged over 50,000 miles in a HMMWV ambulance has broken me from wanting to spend any more time in the wretched things. Something not addressed yet is that they are slow, not their acceleration (leisurely at best) but their maximum velocity. The speedo goes to 60 mph and fully buried-diesel screaming-WFO you might see 70 but really 60 is their honest top end. Makes for long road trips.
No cruise control either but the throttle return springs are heavier than the clutch in any other car I've driven. Enough that I started having knee pain when I drove too many hours.
The portal hubs and inboard brakes make for a very strange ride as there is a lot of "slop" between inputs and vehicular response. It rocks back and forth an inch or so when you come to a complete stop.
Those civvy versions with the 350's didn't help their cause. From reviews I read at the time, everybody wanted to trade for the diesel if they had one.
well, it sounds like we are learning why they are only 5k.
HOWEVER!!!
Say I had a (at least was at one point) road legal truck about like this:
Can I "replace" that engine, frame, running gear (read: everything except the body) with the stuff from one of these HMMWVs and have a super capable - albiet slow, uncomfortable, noisy, hard to work on, etc - titled road vehicle?
I can overlook a lot of "quirks" in a vehicle with personality. I enjoyed driving my grandfather's three stick Mack with no power anything. An H1 was a few issues too many.

I know this was posted above but it really deserves full appreciation. Imagine the dude who screwed up rigging these and the reaming he's probably still receiving.

My dad has a deuce and a half he bought a couple years back. It's a beast of a truck... and totally useless. It's so tall, you really don't want to have to chuck firewood up into that bed.

Amazing.

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective. It has a ton of space, it's just laid out poorly. Say, for instance, you wanted to turn it into a camper. You could probably fit at least one adult size mattress in the middle between the seats, maybe fit a second one in the back.
I guess it is the vehicular equivalent of a badly fragmented hard drive.

In today's ARMY he probably pulled out a "stress card" and then got promoted for being so brave to point out the abuse when an NCO started yelling at him...

Yep, that is one of the nice things about the HMMWV's. Just roll out your sleeping bag in the middle, and you've got a dry place to sleep.
Now, about that photo above of putting HMMWV guts under an M-37? I wouldn't. M37's are too cool on their own, as-is. I wouldn't ruin one by over-modifying it.
