Disclaimer: This is probably a terrible idea.

I live on a very lightly traveled dirt road. I also have about 4 miles or so of other dirt roads directly connected to mine. Recently I have been thinking(that's where i think all my problems start), that I could turn a part of the roads into a just for fun/weekend and probably not legal rally stage.

I have about a mile from my house to a T shaped intersection and then another ~mile and a half to the next intersection with a possible jump because of a smallish but sturdy looking cement bridge in between. My thought is that I could get myself and least 3 friends to turn that into a track.

one driver, one person at my house(start line), one person at the first intersection, and one person at the second intersection(finish line or halfway point). each person gets a walkie talkie and you only drive/race when all three points have cleared that their respective station is clear of all traffic(which is light anyways). a couple of cheap stopwatches and it could be loads of fun.

So just how bad of an idea is this?

All it takes is one berk up and someone (innocent) gets hurt or worse. But I understand the draw.

As to rally-style driving on open public roads: don't. It's hard enough to find roads to do actual rallies on in this country and you doing anything that you call a "rally" illegally just gives rally a bad rep....

It's also a bad idea to do rally-type driving without a caged car with appropriate safety gear in the first place....

it would be a better idea if you got permission to do it all via the appropriate permits (shouldn't be hard if this road is as lightly-traveled and lightly-populated as it seems), get it sanctioned, and make it into an actual RallySprint, if the roads are actually worth driving..

Also, if you're planning to do something illegal, never a good idea to post about it on the interwebz. Never know when someone who is in law enforcement may be reading

Bad. Esp. if it is a public road maintained by the town.

Now, if you could convince the town to close the road for an event

Hey, they did it at Watkins Glen.

No clue on how one would go about getting those kinds of permits, but the people that have anything to do with the roads are all dirtbags around here so thats probably a no go.

Also no clue on what would make the road worth driving in such a style.

It is technically county maintained, but if they did it more than twice a year I would die of shock.

I can't get the county to allow me to even run internet lines down the road.

It is all privately owned land though.

My father knows all the owners pretty well, but the 'county maintained' thing kinda kills that option.

You'd probably have better luck using the privately owned land than the roads. Depending on the owners and what it's used for.

The land is all undeveloped forest. Hundreds of acres of it

The kinda funny thing about that is that the paved road next to the dirt road I am talking about is used regularly for street drag racing because of how far away from everything it is.

The local cops show up to that just to watch and I have heard that they bet on the races too.

You don't want a sturdy looking cement bridge anywhere near rally inspired antics. That's how going sideways goes wrong.

OK, I'll step up and play Mr. Wetblanket. It may seem overly dramatic, but let's play out the worst case scenario.

You and your friends are on the walkie talkies. Everything looks clear at the intersections, but someone misses seeing a kid that's taking a shortcut across a field, fixing a flat on his bike, or out looking for his lost dog. Kid gets killed. Who will the law hold accountable? (Side thought, will your buddies stay at their stations when the ambulance & cops are coming, or suddenly remember something else they were supposed to be doing?)

You're gonna tell me it wouldn't happen 'cause it's too remote. And you've already mentioned the local cops at the illegal drags, but what happens to those badged morons when someone flips their street racer and someone dies there? Their lack of foresight and sense of duty shouldn't be a guide for anyone's behavior.

Make sure you engage in both sides of the intellectual exercise before you decide to go and do it. Wishful thinking and half-assery generally lead to poor outcomes. Have I mentioned that I think this is a colossally bad idea?

Find the local rally cross scene, or if there isn't one then create the local rally cross scene. Do that and there's no telling what cool places that could lead you and your buddies.

This was definitely the right place to ask about this.

A lot of experience and good sense around here.

Eh, if I lived close to you and the place checked out as "quiet" enough in my opinion, I'd join ya :)

Yeah i recommend actual rallycross. It will be more fun, no real liability, you get to meet like minded people, and the entry fee is cheaper than a ticket and worth it not to piss off your neighbors. You dont need to modify your car. It will need to pass tech but its basic stuff that any car should have anyway (seatbelt, battery hold down, etc) no need for a cage or harnesses or any of that stuff. They even have loaner helmets if you dont have one. It has a very laid back friendly atmosphere, unlike a lot of other forms of racing. After your first race it takes about three days to pry the smile off your face. Plus, once you compete in an actual sanctioned race you get to tell people you are a race car driver.
